Check it out:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/[....]ne-processor-found-620mhz-arm/

iPhone´s processor specs:

* ARM1176JZF chip with TrustZone (enables trusted computing environment for media, apps, network, OS, etc. -- very bad for hackers)

* Can vary in clock speed up to 700MHz or more, depending on implementation (thanks, Nigma)

* ARM Intelligent Energy Manager (claimed to reduce power consumption 25-50% in portables)

* 16K / 16K cache

* Features vector floating point coprocessor ("for embedded 3D-graphics")

* ARM Jazelle enabled for embedded Java execution (hmm...)

* SIMD, high perf integer CPU (8-stage pipeline, 675 Dhrystone, 2.1 MIPS)

* 0.45 mW/MHz power draw (with cache)

Sounds impressing.
My FSC Loox N560 has a 624 MHz.
My P990 has a 201 Mhz.
You can imagine how fast is the Loox compared to P990.
iPhone is quite cool in this respect.

This processor comparison thing is not good. It's not that processor speed is everything you need to be happy.

Compare:

Ubuntu Linux wiht Beryl running on 1,2Mhz Duron, RAM 1024
Windows Vista running on f.e. Athlon 64 (1,8MHz), RAM 1024

Which will do faster?

The whole speed depends very much on Operating System. If OS is "heavy" than even good processor cannot help.

And I think that SE's 201Mhz isn't enough for some multimedia functionality but it is enough for overall buinness functionality, photos, music. And with ram added and memory leaks fixed it is good platform (i mean uiq 3). Maybe next generation of symbian from se will need better processor (maybe p3i?)

Thats my opinion of course.

Cheers

apple is known for making computers with relatively fast CPUs onboard. which is no doubt why 700Mhz processor is used on iphone. iphone system GUI is heavily animated. even way heavier than what SE could do with it's UIQ 3 and A200 platform. so a fast CPU is needed for an OS(mac os x) which is known to require fast CPU frequency

on the other hand my linux even runs faster than my friend's windows XP SP 3 even though i only have 1300Ghz AMD duron and my friend's XP has a pentium 4 2.26Ghz! we've got same RAM though i have a faster AGP card than him
