oh.
it would be helpful if you tell us which samsung are you talking about. From what i know, samsung has horrible Java support. Did you look up any java application for MP3 playback?

Actually the phone uses some built in "codecs" in the phone firmware so they enable you MP3 playback. As the P990 was able to play wma files after software update, there might be some kind of so called "patch" for phones. For Samsung I'm not that sure, but there was a java application that played MP3 files. If the Samsung phone is java enabled one (and supports the program to read the files from the phone memory) and it can put MP3 file in the memory it should be able to play. But no one knows until we try because there are many things the phone needs to play MP3 through java app:

- Java engine;
- Good internal memory;
- Ability to save "unknown format files";
- Can read files through Java application;
- Have phone processor powerful enough to play the MP3 file;

That's my opinion .
Sony Ericsson software/hardware support!

is there a point, if it doesnt have mp3 support, it is very likely that it will have low memory space on the phone, which could mean even if u do get it to play mp3s there will be no space to store them.

The Ngage QD does not play MP3s by default.. It can if you add a third party player..

Is this someting like this??
T230 >> T610 >> Ngage QD >> N73 >> N85 >> Omnia HD >> And countless other review units

Why do not you remove its battery and see from its back that which samsung model is this. On symbian nokia phones,for example 6600 we can install ultra mp3 and it starts playing mp3 although other wise it do not have mp3 support
