A Nokia E50 will likely be my next mobile phone. I have never owned a "smartphone" or "PDA phone" before. However, I have owned PDAs before (both Palms, a Tungsten T3 and Z22).

Anything I should know about before buying an S60 device in general, and the E50 in particular?

Well, I don't have the E50 yet - there are two (dumb)phones also under consideration.

My question boils down to, what do I need to know/be aware of in changing from a dumbphone to a smartphone - in general, and in particular, going from UI to Symbian S60?

Welcome to the world of "Smart" telephony.

First thing you do is go to www.my-symbian.com. Great apps. Then go to www.mobile9.com and get yourself a nice theme. Then go out to the Nokia site and do an upgrade on your phone.

After all of this, it will probably be tomorrow and I will have some new instructions for you.

Great phone by the way. I have the E61 and the N95. Love them.

Cheers

Thanks for the tips If I do get that E50 (or an E65, or an N95 ), I'll come straight to this thread.

Now that I've cooled off a bit, I want to first wait and see what announces on the 14th. I also want to see if the rumors are true about a US-3G-compatible N95.

With a certain amount of bias (I have one), I recommend the N95. It is great. Has a few problems but these are software related and can be addressed.

dont install themes you probably will not use, because half of the themes cannot be uninstalled.

don't be shocked when you transfer a lot of data to phone and it takes a minute or two to access the files the first time! once it's through with updating, it'll open the files at normal speed thereafter!!! If your data-plan allows for it, get nokia's podcast app. - works quite nicely (now video as well!).
Also, check out bobafett's Symbian-shortcut-thread! (tips and tricks, very good!)... [addsig]

Not true dude.

You can simply delete them. They are simply .sis files and will go away with the "c" command. This brings up the Application Manager and you can simply select the file and delete it.

Really. Try this if you can. Install the file again and then delete it. I had this happen to me with some applications if I format the machine but have installed the app to the memory card. The reg and uninstall files are on the card while the .exe is sometimes on the phone.

Cheers dude.

... tell me sapp...,
occasionally when I install apps on my e61 using pc suite, I end up with the same up twice on the phone - 1 x installed, 1 x not-installed???! Not a big prob, but strange? doesn't happen if I install straight to phone!

Hi all,

As i actually like to try different Themes quite often and they are all on my comp i quite often remove them and have never had a problem yet deleting them.

@ Maggflodd,

The only problem i have is TT6 wouldn't install once and shows up in the App manager as not installed but as it is just 1 line it really doesn't effect the running of the device or cause any problems so i have just left it there along with the installed version. The reason i delete the themes i am not currently using is just to free up some space and they are easy enough to install when needed. But i have read i am not alone with this Tom Tom anomaly.

Marc
