Just a little story about my N95.
I still love the phone. Just was surprised the GPS wasn't reliable at all. (based on my experience and others as well)
(didn't give me good paths when going to cambridge either)

Here is a story about GPS and the GPS in the Nokia N95.
The Nokia N95 was not even supposed to have a GPS. It was included towards the end of production development. Second, the chipset used was not the best that money can buy. It is a chipset that works in many to most cases. If Nokia had put in the SIRF Start III chipset, there is a chance your phone would have cost about $50 more. Would you be willing to pay that? Third, the antenna for the phone is in an illogical place. Directly under the keypad. Anyone that knows about GPS knows that the receiving antenna needs a good look at the sky to get the best performance. This is the case with the N95. I have a Garmin GPSMap 60 CSx, and it can get a signal while sitting in my bedroom with our without a good look at the sky because it has currently the best chipset (SIFR Star III) available for a handheld.
Bottom line. No GPS is 100% fool proof. They make mistakes just like humans do.

I'm unsure if you've seen adverts of the N95, especially in the UK. But they push forward the fact that it's a full fledged GPS device.
I mention my blog post not to 'target' the N95. I'm providing another point of view because in the shops, there have been alot of people coming in and complaining the GPS takes them through odd routes and alot of sites claim the GPS to be 'one of the best' or comparable to the best stand alone GPS systems.
I'll gladly pay $50 more if it'll mean that I'll get where I want to go safely and quickly 
I wish they did put that other chip set in though, but I want to blame the actually Smart2Go app if I think about it. Mainly because I think that it's routing is not very good. I see no difference between choosing "speed" or "shortest distance".
I also totally agree with you about the antenna thing. I mean, the position is just stupid! I would probably be more relaxed if it came with something like an extended antenna for the car.
Its interesting that the GPS was a last minute add-on lol. I imagine the men sitting in an office thinking "hmmm... we've got too many of the same phone, lets add something" and the other guy says "tv? nah. 5mp camera that actually is 5mp? Nah. sat nav? Yeah why not"

I havent experienced the N95s navigation myself but one of the guys at work has one and says the anvigation is a load of rubbish. He said that his N95 wanted to take him down dirt tracks and wanted to take him a really weird way from bournemouth to london.
What is the point of including a function if it doesnt do what it is supposed to do. It is mainly the software to blame.
Is it possible to put tomtom onto the N95?

Found out that the N95 will not work with Tomtom unless you use an external BT GPS device.
To use the N95 as a decent sat nav you need a program like tomtom and external gps so why bother? My TYTN I got for £200 6 months ago and does all the N95 can do (except the pointless builtin gps and the better camera) and has a bigger screen for navigating.

For me, I have not had problems with the GPS. For the most part that is. It does have incredibly slow spin up times, but once it works it seems to be okay.
By the way, make sure you have upgraded the phone to V11 software. It does make a difference.

Yes. I guess they had space there for the after thought. I wish they had included GPS in the original development cycle. I also wish they had included the better chipset, but they didn't. There is a bit that can be done with software, so hopefully they are tuning it a bit.

Think about this for a moment. If that were the case, you wouldn't have a phone at all. Name one, just one phone that is without any flaws. In this very forum there are two super long threads still complaining about the k800i, and the P990 that are almost a year old. Get my point. Your statement while understandable, is a bit short sighted at best. Phones have problems. People demand new, better, faster, and they want it now. Many are not willing to wait though, with you being in this crowd it seems. I have an N95 with problems but I also know that Nokia has a better track record of trying to meet customer satisfaction than SE.

lol he means the names of the roads.
When you say v11, do you mean v11 of Smart2Go?
Or are you talking about firmware? I'm sure i have the latest firmware thats for sure.
