Hi Guys,

I bought a P990i in Hong Kong, they guaranteed it was in English and is but when I try to key an sms chinese characters appear. Sony helpline are useless. I know there is a way to switch to english input, can someone tell me how?

Thanks.

Try a long press on the "#" key before composing a message.

Download far manager of da vinci flasher. (far is free) download the latest firmware and emea which has all the languages on. Once the flash is finished wait a bit then turn the phone back on. Then it should start in english and say what language you want, obviously select english again. Then you can enjoy your new phone!

Thanks fo rthe advise to press # but it doesn't seem to work. Does putting the latest firmware on mean that the phone will think it's a UK model rather than asian?

With the flip open, tap the virtual keyboard located at the bottom of the screen and the tap abc located at the left of 123.

My brother had that problem and the "#" worked.

Anyway, we went for a permanent solution. We used KKClient and changed the CDA to World Generic 1.

Good to know that problem is solved. Could you please post how it was solved. I was just trying to submit another solution but it is no longer required.

Hi! Just read your post about switching your P990 from chinese to english input. I did the advice of pressing # and of tapping the virtual keyboard but the problem is not solved. Can you tell me what you did to solve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

oh my god.. it works (the tap on virtual keyboard to abc)...

And I have owned the phone since Oct 2006... my solution was to turn off chinese text input for both virtual keyboard and keypad input (in tools>control panel>device>text input) ... do this if everything fails..

the down side of this "dumb" method is that i cant type ABC using keypad... which is fine since i can use the qwerty keyboard for SMS.. but looking up contacts with flip closed is a pain... I couldn't type 8 for "t" for example...so I needed to scroll all the way down or open flip to type...

I downloaded language installer from SE site and tried installing American English and it wouldn't install.. I was hoping firmware update will fix this.. but so far there is no update for HK version CDA /6....

And trust me, I made at least two posts before (like months ago) and no one could solve this problem...

But now I am a happy camper... even running dated Organizer R2A05... I can use keypad to type text now... I just wanted simple function to work like its supposed to...

THANKS!!!!!

Plus, the long press of # works too...

In writing SMS in flip closed: press # until you see "chinese selected" or "english selected". And the text icon on top will change from "a pen" (chinese) to "Aa" (english)...

Hope this helps too.. and if you dont type chinese at all, turn off virtual keyboard in the control panel. It will save some memory (RAM).

There is another method to switch between Chinese/English input:

While flip is opened and virtual keyboard is not, you will see a small window near top left corner which shows a Chinese character for Chinese or English, ', and X. If this window is not shown then tap on the screen within editing area.

1. Tap the Chinese character: It will toggle between Chinese and English. That is, if it is already in Chinese mode then it will be changed to English mode and vice versa.
2. Tap on ', you will see a list of symbols to choose.
3. Tap on X this window will be closed.

Hi guys! Just want to share with you how I was finally able to solve the keyboard input problem.

I finally managed to solve it by just updating my system using the Sony Software Update service. After that, I was able to use my keyboard to sms in english.

Despite this problem which I had for about a week, it still is a beautiful phone imho.

Cheers!
