I want to know what really defines a phone as 3G - i though about this after the postr "have u guys seen this phone"

3G is a set of bandwidths that are wider (offer more spectrum) than the current GSM/CDMA/PDC 2G technologies.
New technologies are needed to take advantage of these wider bandwidths. CDMA20001x, W-CDMA and TS-CDMA are three such technologies.
The new air interface for Europe is called WCDMA, and will operate at the 2100mhz frequency.
The speed of a 3G terminal, as defined by the International Telecommunications Union, is anything over 144kbps download.

Do you think that the 2100Mhz frequency is going to be used globaly. or each region is going to have a different one? |

In the USA the military has occupied the 2.1 GHz frequency. But I know that AT&T has built a "test-net" in the Dallas area consisting of 1900 MHz WCDMA RBS:es delivered by Ericsson. |

the biggest advantage is the higher speed... theoretically 3G has a speed of 2Mbit/s, but this is under perfect conditions, in real life the speed will be at ~100-300Kbps.
then there is more possibilities to have new types of services that wasn't possible (or in slimmed-down versions) with earlier mobile systems. |
