N95 4gb sd / recover lost sd capacity |

I got a 4gb SD card today in order to try if it works on the N95... as probably expected... it doesn't.
initially it recognised the card as a 2gb card but with 3/4 already used and only 1/4 free, although the card was empty
as part of this trial I formatted the card in the phone and this caused it to be resized so that it is now recognised as a 120mb card and unfortunately formatting in windows does not offer to change its size from 120mb
I expect there is a tool somewhere that can restore its original capacity so I'm looking for hints in that direction please

That should teach you that its stupid to have an "all in one" multimedia phone that has no space to store your media. 2 GB is just ridiculously small. Sell your N95 dude and get yourself a P1. |

@deepu
Please enlighten us as to what storage the P1 offers with M2 cards then ? and how you can say 2gb is small is beyond me it's good for at least 6 albums a couple of films, loads of pictures and f course not forgetting Doc's and Pdf's and as hot swapping is supported you could always carry additional Albums, Films and files on another 2gb named brand card costing sub £20 not exactly the end of the world difficult or inconvenient is it? Oh and of course not forgetting one has been released for a month now and the other is due when if it's not late of course and hopefully relatively bug free this time also.

And eventually the N95 and others should get a firmware upgrade to support SDHC?

If they dont work.... try the pc analyst way
go to control panel, 'administrative tools', then 'computer management'.
then on the left, go to 'removable storage', then 'media'
choose the memory card, then right click on it and select 'free' then 'ok'
once its done reformat it and make sure its a full format

thanks for the suggestions etc but these tools seem to be data recovery after a reformat, rather than fixing the reduced capacity. I did also try the admin computer management but it also didn't see more than 120mb. I was hoping that would see a smaller partition had been created with more space to expand into.
everywhere shows 120mb, phone, windows XP, windows vista. its as though the physical characteristics of the card have been altered by the N95 format.
I did find a tool on the SD cards association web site but that didn't offer anything useful
oh well... a lesson learned

no, of course not. it was always assumed that 2gb was currently the limit and I wasn't even able to do the full tests I wanted to do. for example my next test would have been a FAT32 format on pc. indeed I may get another to try that if no one else doesn't already try it first. The card I received was FAT16 and being 4gb probably meant it had that dodgy method that makes 4gb work on FAT16
I already have a couple of 2gb cards and that is fine by me. One for music, software, maps etc and the other for videos

Did you buy it from sandisk (the one that claim to be able to support N95)? Is it a SDHC card? If it is then we know N95 reader can read this type of SDHC card since it is able to detect the card (eventhough it did not report the right capacity). Were you able to save data to the card?
I dont know. Maybe there is a way to make microSDHC behaves like microSD and compatible for N95. Maybe some of these memory card makers know how to do that.
Anyway 2GB microSD card is very cheap now at 16euro (or 10pound). I just bought two. It is much cheaper than buying the newly released 4GB. And it is not much of problem to hot swap card in and out of N95. Even if N95 cannot support bigger capacity, it is no big deal. Anyway, the memory card is used mostly for data as all my programs are installed to main memory.

i've had this prob too masseur...
Its the readers on the pc and on the n95!!!
The N95 doesnt support above 2Gb so sometimes with anythin higher it will show a strange amount...
And on the PC side if ur reader is a slightly older one it may not read high capacity cards... I have two card readers which look the same but one will read 2Gb micro sd if its in its adapter but the other one wont read it as anything above 512mb!!!!

I am really surprised that the N95, a top of the range phone, does not support more than 2GB of memory. The, now, old P990i, supports 4GB cards.
