Heard O2 were introducing this phone in the U.K. It looks more or less like a version of the Sharp GX-10 but in a candy-bar (non-clamshell) design.
Surprised it doesn't have Java, as the GX-10 does - it is cheaper to buy though.

I honestly dont see the point in the GX-1 , as the GX-10 is basically the same but is alot nicer with its chamshell design, i think its was a waste of time for sharp, unfortunatly.

Ericsson have been left behind.
Sharp are now the leading camera phone supplier in the world.

Sonyericsson are the only manufacturer in Japan not to release a camera phone, when most are on their third or fourth. Sharp hava made 8 camera phones for Jphone/Vodafone and DoCoMo since November 2000. |

02 asked Sharp for an exclusive camera phone, Sharp made the GX1 to 02's specifications (basically rehashed the insides of the J-SH06), then 02 put a lot of money in Sharp's bank account.
02 get an exclusive handset, Sharp get market share in Europe and don't have to worry about selling it because that is all done by 02.
Doesn't sound like a waste of time to me! |

My point is that it idoesn't matter to Sharp if it is a success or not, because 02 have already paid them, and taken delivery of the handset.
If 02 start giving them away free with a contract everywhere, like they have done in the UK, they will keep a few of their subscribers that may have gone elsewhere, and win few new subsribers who like the look of the phone and realise its exclusive to them.
Like I said, Sharp have been paid handsomely, they couldn't care less.
@MDS
The height isn't a problem, its about the same as a 6310i. Its the thickness thats not too good. My freind has one and I always think hes a bit too pleased to see me until I remember he has a GX1! |

I agree that sharp is the beneficary here... But the GX1's current price level is unsutainable even in the short term. Market forces will cause the price to plummet with great force within 1 month. At £130 RRP, demand for the product will be very slim. Demand curve is likely to be very elsastic due to better substitutes to this product. Current RRP should be £100 max so it it is at least 20% overvalued relative to other substititues in the market. O2 will probably face excess supply of the GX1 and were probably more optimistic that they should have. Providing their pruchase volumes of the GX1 are failry low, the GX1 may not fall so rapidly and significantly according to this analysis. I have the gx1 and not impressed. Battery is crap and camera is not so good relative to others and functionality is on the slim side. The design is nice but the size is unacceptable. 7650 is much better in terms of functionality and is better priced. Mine gx1 is going back and i'm buying an SPV! |

SPV is unlikely to take off in the market as it's still a stop-gap GPRS phone with a Pocket PC interface (which alone makes it pretty unique).
The Nokia 7650 is way bigger than the Sharp in size, and the price is going to stay high as mobile operators are strategically reducing subsidisies (in the U.K. at least) for premium phones. There's a shortage in revenue and operators don't really care if you change networks if all you want are to grab the subsidisies on phones, if you're a hig enough usage person than talking to your service provider may very well get you a bigger subsidy than on offer to the general public.
As these phones get replaced, their prices may be reduced - but remember, the Sharp and suchlike include a camera built-in so you are paying for that as well.

The GX1 is available free on contract froom a few 02 stores in central London.
For the real cost of adding a camera to a phone, watch this interview with a Sharp engineer at CEATAC 2002, Japans answer to CeBit.
I'll give you a clue, it's less than $10.. http://www.wirelesswatchjapan.com/eps/39.htm |
