Looks like the Memory Stick PRO Duo just went one up against its competition with the latest flash format that can store a whopping 32GB of data.
According to the latest press release from Sony Electronics Asia Pacific, the Memory Stick PRO-HG will be launch in Asia in August. Three storage capacities will be available (1GB, 2GB, 4GB) at launch.
According to the press release, the new Memory Stick PRO-HG (High Grade) Duo flash memory card format will have a maximum data transfer speed of 480Mbps or 60MB per second (in theory). This is said to be three times faster than the current Memory Stick PRO format. Minimum write speed at 8-bit parallel transfer is pegged at 120Mbps or 15MB per second. However, these numbers may vary. For example, the Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo functions as Memory Stick PRO when used with host devices compliant with the latter.
The introduction of the new Memory Stick format is a result of the collaboration between Sony Corporation and SanDisk Corporation. The flash media is expected to be available in 2007.

So that's why there's no branding on it.

it will be intersting 2 see for which phone (if it does decide to) uses these cards.I think the biggest boost would be for the walkman phones...with more song storage of upto 32GB...it sure as hell would heat up the ipod vs walkman rivalry!

This is the reason really - to take as much money as possible from the customers.

Its theoretical maximum, not that we'll see such a capacity in 1-2 years on this type of memory card.Really the Walkmans will have the biggest boost, but if you want to compare an Ipod and a Walkman in terms of capacity its more convenient to take the W950i or its successor as they have way better $/MB ratio than the memory card has.So after all,its a better deal to buy a W950i than a W900i/W850i with 4GB mem stick.
