Does the flashy branded one work? Kidding, but really:
Where do you think this is going? [addsig]

seems to me that the majority of people only use the talking/texting facility most of the time. (the rest of the bells and whistles are just for the fashion show) What I think is needed is a basic funtioning phone at a very affordable price say sub $40-$50- what do you think?

Actually, there isn't much to argue about! You see a lot of folks with top notch phones and they cannot even add a contact - they just picked the flashest upgrade! But here in Ireland you also see a lot of folks with 5-10 yr-old phones and they get upset when the phone breaks and they realise they'll now have to buy something with 50 keys, slots, blue teeth (?)and mp3 (aren't those automatic weapons?)! Yes, you're right. I'd also prefer a phone having the most basic functions that i use.
I see quite a lot of people who have a high end phone just for the sake of it. They can't even use the basic functions as sms, leave alone the advanced ones.

It depends on what you really want from your phone. If you're interested in it's features you might buy it but if you're not convinced about it you shouldn't buy it. I believe you should really use money WELL. I'm not bragging but I really liked the idea of having music in your phone even before the Walkman series came forth. Hence, I bought a fairly expensive W810 bec I was convinced I truly wanted it. However, I did not buy an M600 even though I liked it coz it wasn't right that there was no camera no walkman and a hotter cousin(w950) on the anvil. All in all, I bought the W810 coz it would take some more earthly updates to bring it to shame.
However, it wasn't the branded flashiness I was looking for in a phone. For all the flashiness on college campuses, it's really hard to find a student who knows WHAT is GPRS or what is WAP or even somebody who can tell you all the features their phone has. Do not waste good phones. There are better phones meant only for talking and SMS.Do not go for branded flashiness
