Blyk, the pan-European free mobile operator for young people, funded by advertising, announced that it will launch in the UK in mid-2007.

Co-founded by university friends Pekka Ala-Pietilä, former president of Nokia Corporation, and Antti Öhrling, Chairman and CEO of Contra Group, Blyk is a mobile media that offers brands an opportunity to directly interact and engage with young people and receive real-time feedback.

Blyk has already signed Buena Vista, Coca-Cola, L'Oreal Paris, and Yell.com for the British launch. It is rumoured to be close to a network deal with Orange.

Blyk has been in development since January 2006 and is backed by individual private investors and Sofinnova Partners.Commenting on the announcement, CEO Pekka Ala-Pietilä said “We have been talking to a number of major brands and agencies about the opportunities to reach and engage with the 16-24 year old market via Blyk. We are going public now to invite all creative marketers and advertisers to join us in shaping this exciting new channel.”Co-founder Antti Öhrling continued “Our Blyk business model brings a fresh approach to the entire industry. We’ve assembled an outstanding and energized team to make this innovation a reality.” source:Blyk theregister

Unbelievable that people in Europe fall for this kind of crap. Those companies should take their advertising up their behinds. [addsig]

Orange and Blyk have formally announced a deal.Blyk, which is due to launch this summer, will offer its customers free mobile phone calls and texts in return for receiving advertising content on their mobile handsets. It will be targeted at the youth market.

Advertisers including Buena Vista, Coca-Cola, I-play Mobile Gaming, L'Oreal Paris, StepStone and Yell.com mobile have already signed up to have their adverts delivered to Blyk customers.

Keith Greenfield, director of wholesale for Orange UK, said: 'Our network is one of our greatest assets and by securing deals like this we are using its potential to the full. Working with innovative new companies like Blyk offers incremental financial rewards for the business which will in turn allow us to compete more ferociously in the UK market.'

A friend just gave me the heads up about this as his dad is involved with it...i think the service has now been launched

Basically you have to agree to accept 6 marketing messages per day and you get free mins and texts per month… sounds alright for those cash-strapped-students out there!

They ran into problems with this one day after starting the service. They specified that you need a phone with MMS support but then found that you cant send MMS's to networks other than BLYK. Dont know if they have sorted it now.
You also have to be aged between 16 and 24 to use it.
