strangely weak signal (p990i) |

been ok since i got it about a month ago, flashed to world generic 1 (R4B03) etc, all working fine,
but just the last day or two it seems to have a really weak signal all the time, even though everybody else i know on orange like me, has a full (or at least almost full) signal strength,
anybody have any ideas as to what this may be?
only thing i've changed is the battery, as i have a spare bst-33, exactly the same as the p990's,
no settings or anything have been altered |

maybe you can try to swap sims;
put your sim in your friends phone and see what signal strenght you get
put one of your friends sim in your phone ......

are the people who have good signal using 3G phones? if they aren't it might be a 3G issue in your area.

then try deactivating the 3G function, and see how the signal does.
this way u can tell if it's a 3G related, or it's network/phone related. |

I see exactly the same thing on Orange: turn on 3G, signal drops a fair bit and wavers. Go to GSM only, signal will stick on five bars. The joy of technology... |

Greetings,
I found the cause of Orange's low signal by chance after being put through to a 3rd party technical department by them. I had gone from an old 2G spare phone to a new HTC phone and wondered why the old phone showed 3 to 4 more bars of signal than the new, state-of-the-art, phone they'd just sold me.
The reason for signal drop and wavering on 3G is that they are over subscribed (overloaded) for data services (blasted USB plug-in, Cell based, stick Internet dongle thingies etc).
There is a way round it.
If you can - set your phone to 2g and you'll instantly gain 3 or more bars...
I know this sounds incredible, given the phones they sell all being 3G, but here's proof:
If you go on to their site and use the Google maps based coverage checker...
Their 'Voice and Text' coverage result is "based on 2G Technology"!
See for your self. Here is their "coverage checker":
http://search.orange.co.uk/ou[....]gechecker.html?channel=direct/
Put in your post code . . .
"voice and text For voice calls and sending text messages(based on 2G technology)" is what you'll see.
WHY? When practically all of the units they sell are 3G?????
I have so far extracted 500mb of free data per month, for the whole contract, from them in compensation.
I seem to be managing on 2G. -All I do is the occasional small bit of email, Ebay or updating SPB Weather on my HTC P4550.
They are well aware that they can not provide what they are selling and are still selling it .. i.e Iphone 3G for example...
I had problems with this (with them) and left them years ago so called them, before taking out this contract, and specifically asked if they had sorted it out. -They claimed to have no problems. I don't think the front-line sellers are even aware of it (or I was lied to).
If this works for you and you have to use the expensive phone they sold you on 2G to get a signal to send and receive calls...
My advice is to call them, complain, and see what they're willing to give you..
I'm afraid I don't usually do forums so I may not be back here for a bit.
I hope this is of help to some of you.
Best regards.
