I just got back from a large meeting in which I was able to speak with the like number 3 guy in ATT WS. One of the main topics his presentation was about was the new GSM/GPRS network. One of the main points he had was that within the next couple months AT&T's GSM network will be as complete as it's current TDMA network. Pretty amazing considering where it was only a few months ago. He also said that they're cutting deals with other carriers all the time to improve the signal all over outside the AT&T footprint network.

it's pretty much a set fact that the GSM network for all ATT users inside the US will:
Cover the ENTIRE continental US with crystal clear reception and full digital voice reception. However, this will be finished as of January 1st, 2003. Untill then, MOST major cities are covered, and reception is still pretty good. I'm noticed week by week I'm getting better reception on my phone in areas I normally don't. Considering they will cover 100% of the United States (continental only - baiscally everything except Alaska and Hawaii) this is an awesome feature, because no other network has this versatility, unless you get that satelite phone from Sony that's like 20 bucks a minute and covers the entire world. |

From what the guy said tonight it's gonna take a bit longer than Jan 1 for it to be complete. And also keep in mind that's just the AT&T footprint. They still need to complete all the deals with other carriers to offer complete coverage throughout the entire US.

any news on MMS for att? I wanted to try that new feature, but still am unable. Also I noticed all Email systems for Att with the t68 don't work. Will that be upgraded and working as well?

I was going to ask about MMS, but didn't get a chance. I'm sure it will be in place soon though. They're really pushing GSM so I'm sure they want to get everything working and in place nicely.

Another thing to keep in mind is that GSM as it exhists in the US today is not true 3G technology. In a few years we'll be seeing the new stuff (can't remember the achronym for the life of me) which will be totally amazing. By that point the cost of a wireless minute should be equal or less than the cost of a wired minute. It's at that point the real communications revolution will take place.
Exciting stuff.

Yes, it is the 2.5 generation for all GSM providers in the US. The 3G system is called UMTS or WCDMA. It is the system that all European and most of the Asian providers will implement. Verizon and Sprint will stick with their Qualcomm system called CDMA2000. |

With the chip amagab mentioned, we should be able to hope for handsets which "do it all". Especially since carriers in both Japan and S. Korea have expressed interest in deploying CDMA2000 technology.

UMTS... that's it. What does that stand for? He was also talking about a data system called EDGE, but he didn't say much about it other than it's better than GPRS.

I just wanted to say that i have been an at&t wireless customer for over 5 years, and i loved your service, in april of 02, i bought a SE t68 phone and was very dissappointed at the service and amount of dropped calls and bad reception areas, I purchased a t68i in sept, and have seen some improvements in reception and dropped calls but they are very slow in updating "towers". When can i expect to get as good reception as when i was on my old nokia 6160 phone? |

My GSM coverage supposedly covers as far down as the Northern Virginia area. I'll be down there for Thanksgiving, so I'll find out in about 2 weeks. I believe AT&T had GSM in DC / Northern VA shortly before Philly. I'll put up a post about my DC/NoVA reception later this month.

i seriously doubt AT&T being capable of covering the continental US. Their gsm service was barely introduced hence, it's gsm network is way too small to be expanded and to be given a humorous jan 1,2003 deadline. i dont even think that there will be any improvements on at&t, cingular and t-mobile. one main reason is: these service providers are concern about the sales 'for the holiday' and spending $$$ on advertisement rather than network expansion or improvement. regarding gprs, for at&t, it won't happen. the launch of gprs in united states which was introduced by cingular 6/2002 (i'll check on that) is not even close to being in it's full potential, how can a new gsm service provider be able to do it? how much will they spend? i hope you all know that cingular's GPRS is still running 9.6kb. u might think it's faster but it's NOT.
at&t would have to join / make agreements (aside from what it is right now) with another company. it wouldnt be successful on it's own.
to date, t-mobile is the only service provider that has true-MMS.
