Voip and Bluetooth on Sony Ericssons |

A wild question, would it be at all possible to turn a Sony Ericsson phone may it be a K800i or P990i into a Skype phone with some kind of application using say a Belkin Bluetooth adaptor?
I understand the newer Bluetooth adaptors from Belkin have this capability?
I notice Sony Ericsson have some kind of Bluetooth Voip ear piece out have'nt they that you can plug into a USB2 port for this kind of function.

Also, whats this application the mobile network 3 are using ? I never knew you could get a Skype application for mobiles but that Nokia N73 seems to be the only supported handset.

Surely therefore you would be able to turn any WiFi mobile into a Skype handset with an appropriate Skype software and running it over you're WiFi network or "hot spots".
I'm also wondering if this could be made a universal function maybe in form of some kind of Java based Bluetooth application for "normal" handsets.
What do you think, it could be done?

as far as i know mate the voip facility with the belkin bt is for use with a bt headset! and i use mine frequently with skype!
skype is apparently coming for uiq3 although everything has gone quiet since xmas!! i personally cant wait though, as i currently use my ipaq hx4700 for skype calls away from home!!

I see, sounds an innovative advancement. The reason why I was thinking about this is because I was looking at Netgears WiFi handset that they make and I thought to myself god thats some really poor talk time in that particular handset (20 hours standby and 2 hours talk time) why could'nt "mobiles" do that.
Good to know someones developing in that area.
Another thing, Skype is free, so I thought to myself why does the network 3 UK have a fair usage policy on it 
So possibly the P1000 may support this? I notice the Sony Ericsson W950i is another handset which 3 are bringing out with this feature but still with this fair usage policy which I think should not exist.

Hi Toney,
The Skype service through the 3 network only works because it routes via their dedicated server. There are various 3rd party solutions available although most of these do incur a mobile call to their server and therefore is not free. The best solution by far is from Fring which only uses a Data connection to thier server so depending on your Data price plan and charges is relatively cheap, although having said that if you are on Web N Walk T-Mobiles data plans VOIP is not allowed.
I have been using Fring for the last few days now on my N93 over WiFi and it is completely free except for Skype out calls which costs the same where ever i use it and is deducted from my Skype account no charges from Fring. The service and quality is excellent currently they support a lot of phones and are adding more all the time S60 3rd Edition phones are pretty well supported but as yet there is no support for UIQ3 phones. Check the Fring threads on this Forum or go to http://www.fring.com. for more information and as some have suggested here E-Mail them and request support for UIQ3 devices.

I'll look into that programme you suggested. I have'nt got a smartphone as such just "normal mobiles" like the K800i etc but will go for maybe a uiq if Sony Ericsson releases a good one.
I can see why these networks don't allow voip calls, their trying to rake in as much as they can from customers. I think they want to rethink that as we already know you can use mobile internet completely free as long as you have a Wifi phone and you connect it to a WiFi network which is good.
This Skype thing from 3 is a gimmick is'nt it, this should be free like traditional skype is on a PC and with Skype handsets. |

I don't think it is a gimmick as such as 3 announced the deal in conjunction with Skype and i am sure have incurred costs in both developing the software and setting up a dedicated server. But they have made it as easy as possible for the average user along with now offering the only real competition to to T-Mobiles excellent priced Data packages at i believe only £5 or £10 per month and whilst unlimited isn't really unlimited it is a lot of data to be using on a mobile and should prove sufficient for most. As i have a Sim free device their is no way any Network can try and tell me what i can or can't do over WiFi and when and if WiMax in the coming years really takes off this could well spell trouble for the Networks.

I had a reply from Fring support, basically saying they don't as yet support Sony Ericsson uiq handsets and basically to keep an eye on their website as when they do it will be on there. |
