in other forums I use any thread that has new messages has a "first unread" icon next to the thread subject and clicking that takes you straight to the the first new message on that thread - on busy threads this is much better than scrolling through the last page or scrolling back from the last message
the footer says this forum is based on phpbb, this is a common feature on many phpbb themes - any chance o haveing it enabled here?

not such a bad idea, although it is usually easy to go back to the first post, but not a bad idea.

no, not go back to the first post when reading a topic, but go straight to the first new/unread message in a topic from the forum index page
for example on the index page for this "General Discussion" forum the "Request for extra moderator(s) " topic has 77 messages, in previous visits I have read the first 70 messages, if I click on the topic I go to the first message and have to manually scroll down to find the messages I have not read yet (messages 71-77) - I would like a "first new" link for each topic to take me straight to the first new message (message 71 in this case)
and no, the xxx New Posts link in the top menu does not help - it only shows which topics have new posts!
