HELSINKI (AFP) - Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone provider, said its share of the global smartphone market slipped in 2006 but added that overall demand for the devices continued to grow.
Nokia sold 40 million smartphones in 2006, or 44.5 percent of the 90-million-unit market.
The company in 2005 sold 28.5 million smartphones, for a market share of 61.5 percent. A total of 46.3 million smartphones were bought in 2005.
Smartphones are multimedia devices combining telephone, computer, Internet, music and photographic functions.
"What is important is that the market continues to expand very strongly," said Nokia communications director Kari Tuutti.
"We are very satisfied with what happened in 2006."
The company estimates that 250 million smartphones will be sold in 2008.

Hi all,
I would imagine one of the reasons that Nokia are not to worried is they know there is a new communicator coming soon and that business users that need a full qwerty and large screen are going to be buying a lot this device. I would be very surprised if this time next year they don't announce a rise in shipped units of Symbian smart phones and with it market share.

i have to admit ive have loads of nokia symbian phones.
started with a 9110i, 9210, 9210i, 7650, 7610, 9500, 6680, N70, 9300i, N73, E70
and they just keep getting better and better.. no bugs, well except the 6680!!
i do love a symbian nokia, my only gripe is they are too similar..
ie you pick up a 7650 put it down and pick up a N93, granted some of the apps have changed and more things have been added but fundamentally its the same phone.
that was i get bored of.. i need a new UI to keep me entertained.
im hope more Nokia phones ship with S80 and S90, S80 is the best platform out there and as for S90 i've never used it! so fingers crossed!
