Hitachi has started mass production of 800 x 480 2.9-inch LCD panels for use in mobile phones, which the company claims is "the industry's first 800 x 480 product as a mobile phone display panel."

The users can view the entire image without side scrolling when browsing websites designed to match the size of a personal computer monitor or watching VGA (480 x 640) video. The panel employs the company's proprietary liquid crystal technology called IPS that boasts wide viewing angle and high image quality.
The pixel count is five times that of QVGA (240 x 320), which has been the norm for mobile phone panels. The new product is a transmissive LCD panel that boasts a viewing angle of over 170 degrees in both vertical and horizontal directions.

Might need some sort of security filter with that viewing angle.

Also, isn't the power consumption roughly proportional to the surface of the LCD, at equal brightness?

have that in a phone, with touch sensor thing over the top (making it a touch screen) then there'd be no need for almost any keys atall...use a graffiti-like system for input and then yeh...have fun!

I don't see the need for such high resolution displays in mobiles. The power consumption really outweighs the benefits of being able to display more pixels.
The N80 for example has 'only' got a 352x416 screen and even that decreases battery life to one practical day.
And then the human eye has a limit to how many pixels per square inch that it can see, so too many has no real purpose apart from making fonts look nicer.
And even digital cameras which need higher resolution screens with 3" screens don't need such high resolution screens.

I think 320x240 is more than enough. How big the video will be when trying to fill 800x480? My 320x240 high quality 3gp is already about 3MB/minute. This is a phone and everything else (camera, video, etc is a bonus). |

hanugro raises a good point, your gona use up loads more storage space on your phone will you not? The battery is still a big deal to, but being a fan of my music clips Im a bit torn by this concept. |
