I got a W850i as an upgrade but its nowhere near as good as the W800i.Apart from the camera being crappy(fixed focus,unable to zoom unless in VGA mode) it will let me browse properly.
On the W800i the internet pages arent fitted to the screen like they are with the 850i so you have to scroll back and forwards across the screen which is a pain in then(_I_)!
I tried updating the software using the data cable, dowmloaded the loatest upgrapde software and get a message saying 'Could not locate a Java Virtual Machine' I have tried updating flash player and all sorts but it seems it wont work on our PC! We dont have XP yet and cant afford it yet but it seems the software wont work on our OS(ME), and neither will sonyericsson.com go!
I can go on the mobile site and do stuff but if I try to access the main site it just wont connect! Weird.
You'd think they'd make it so you can download from the site to your phone directly!
But would upgrading the software on my W800i enable smart fit for web pages?

Well you didn't mentioned what is your current software version of your w800, but anyway upgrading will not help. You better give a little search through the web and find a nice java application internet browser for your phone. There are some nice:
Opera Mini 3
Opera Mini Advanced Mod

Well, i got Opera mini, can now browse, yippee! The only thing is if I click on a link in an email on my phone it doesnt use Opera, trues to use the phones default browser and it doesnt work.
Havent a clue what version of software its got, how do i find out?

u can check the fone fw with using the keypad and joy on the following way:

Oh yea I remember now. Its a bit hit and miss cos my joy stickj thingy ius sticking, needs a clean.

u got an old fw as i see, but i dont think it has anything to do woth the email bug. when i used opera mini it do disturbed me, that every single time i wanted to download a pic, it disconnected and started to browse again after confirmation.

Yea I noticed it does that but it doesnt bother me that much. I just wish i could browse from my emails. The W850 is grea for that but the camera an build of the phone is very poor!
(W800i is the best phone Ive ever had!)
