My local unlocking place does it by drilling, same with the V3x unlocks...

They drill into a certain point on the board and it unlocks the phone, can be terrible if you go just a mm off, as they killed a V3i the other day haha

Its called testpoint .. the phone doesnt HAVE to be drilled but most people do rather than take off the whole casing to get to the board.
You then touch a certain point while unlocking the phone with software .. it is the only way to do the newer Motorolas.
