Samsung announces S60-powered SGH-i520 |

Nokia gets the lion's share of the attention when it comes to the S60 platform and Symbian generally -- perhaps rightfully so, considering they ship far more Symbian-based smartphones than any other vendor -- but Samsung would like to politely remind everyone that they're an S60 licensee, too. Their latest effort, the SGH-i520 slider, had its coming-out party this week at the Symbian Smartphone Show, and the spec sheet looks to give Nokia's E- and N-series multimedia powerhouses an honest-to-goodness run for their money. The typical 2-megapixel camera and QVGA display aside, the i520 packs an HSDPA radio -- something no released Nokia handset has managed to do; granted, the N95 does it, but we've got a little wait ahead of us for that monster. Lucky owners also get a microSD slot should they find the 45MB of usable storage a bit light, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, and a front-facing VGA shooter for those ever-popular video calls. Per protocol, it doesn't seem that a US launch is in the works, but one can never be sure; stranger things have happened.

Basically, S60 IS the UI, with Symbian as OS in the "background" - so it will be mostly the same (apart from manufacturer-specific tools and similar things) |

I wanted to clarify this statement as those not in the know can find it misleading.
1> Just like Symbian OS is at the core of the S60 & UIQ platforms - this has many different versions which EACH affect the abilities of the platforms. We see this more in the S60 because of the amount of phones in use.
2> S60 platform has many features dependent & NON-dependant on the OS. example the old Nokia Ngage was based on Series 60 1st Edition (Version 1.2), based on Symbian OS 6.1.
N-Gage even the QD you could NOT change the THEME (without hacking the core platform - not a good idea). newer versions of the Platform & OS allowed for this.
Now the Nokia 6600 used Series 60 2nd Edition (Version 2.0), based on Symbian OS 7.0s
- which allowed for THEMEs to be changed by installing mini apps or .sis files.
Now an example of NON-OS-dependant features of the Platform is for
Series 60 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 1 (Version 2.1), based on Symbian OS 7.0s
- Nokia 6620 had EDGE class 4 implemented in the radio & the Platform was able to use it. But phones like the Panasonic X700/X800 only had a radio for GPRS they didnt have EDGE. The limitation was the hardware.
now there was a slight version adjustment of the
Samsung SGH-D710 (either limited production or JUST prototype)
that was capable of UMTS > but how can that be when it was only running on Series 60 2nd Edition (Version 2.0), based on Symbian OS 7.0s
( Contains new features like J2ME/MIDP 2.0 support and themes )
when
Series 60 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 2 (Version 2.6), based on Symbian OS version 8.0a
( Symbian 8.x has support for WCDMA (GSM 3G) and cdma2000 network) ????
So the S60 GUI interface was slightly different by 3rd party manufacturers using the S60 GUI.
Panasonic X700/X800 was very different from Samsungs SGH-D710/720/730(later never made it into mass production).
These phones could run MOST .sis apps for their OS/platform implementation but issues with running those apps were limited NOT to the S60 GUI themed, but more to the restrictions placed on the GUI by the manufacturer - think of it as branding.
btw, I've owned and used the X700 (5mths), Nokia 6620 (8mths), and the X800 2mths. And many applications worked for ALL while very few did not.

hi! @ least samsung made a better effort than the D720...but isnt it just a slide-up N70? Look @ its specs! I guess its for people who like to be different. Why cant samsung create their own symbian UI? Being samsung, they could introduce so many new features!

What do you mean by saying 'slide-up N70'? I use a N70 and I can assure you is not a slider (neighter up nor down). Looks nice althou the LG-Joy looks even better. At least some competition for Nokia. Does anyone know something about a s60 powered cellphone with screen input ? (P930 for the chinese market is one but for the rest of the world ?)

I meant that its a slider with the features of an N70. And LG is doing the same with the JoY slider. What a pack of sheep! I.e one company starts a trend, the rest follow. F.I.Y The nokia 6708 runs on UIQ 2.1, just like the P910i.

Remember, this is not 'just another Samsung'! It is build on the most popular cell os out there. To say 'it does not do this or that' is meaningless. After all my laptop did not do much after it arrived from the shop ! A few days later and it could even make telephone calls :)

Unlike SE, Alcatel, Sharp etc, Samsung has 'teeth' and even worse, it does 'bite' ! Nokia does not give a sh!t about small 'competition', but Samsung is one of the 3 big guns out there. Now that the S60 (thru Nokia) has established itself as the OS of choice in 'smart' cellphones (don't confuse with pdas) surely the market will fiercely be defended. If Motorola decides to jump in too the battle line is drawn. :)

Don`t think that. S60 is a kind of business with some market share. Nokia has the most, Motorola and Samsung, LG and some others have licenses too. SE bought some, laterly, I thought!
