I dont think so, until you can get an American version.

UMTS has already been rolled out in some US markets for some time already. It's just a matter of making time before they make it mainstream (available in select markets) at this point. T-Mo had also announced 3G release last year planned for nationwide release before the end of this year through the next year.

However, that has nothing to do with having to wait for a US release version of the P990. Because UTMS is basically a third generation version of 3G it's already capable of running on 1900mz/2100mhz. The only option of a P990 US release would bring is a 850mhz band which providers could port their 3G networks on. However, it would only be an expansion of what is capable now. So it doesn’t necessarily mean the P990i version in the US is not a viable option for running these services on.

I stand corrected about the viability of the P990i in the US with UMTS. P990i = UMTS 2100 (only), therefore, the network capabilities aren't there.

I used to have the P900, and I can say the reception is better on the P990i, on Cingular. Not much better though, just little better. Still better LOL. [addsig]

The P900 works great on tmob. The P990 would work the same way on tmob. However there is currently no compatble 3G network available in the US that would work with the P990i.

cool. thanks for the info. i'm still deciding whether i should wait for a p990a or get the p990i now, and if the p990a comes out later, then get the p990a. what do u guys think? afterall, p990a was mentioned on the sony p990 white page.

Should you get the "a" version, it will only work in US. My wife has a S710a, and I got the unlcok code, so now it's SIM free. Well, sort of, because when I went to Europe this summer, the phone was not able to pick any network, while my P900 had no issues. So somehow if you get the "a" make sure you don't travel abroad with it. At least this is my experience. I would stick with the P990i. [addsig]
