I read a worrying post that a P990 will, just like the P910, not upload its phonebook to the BT system, rendering the solution virtually useless. Anyone has tried/seen/heard more about it?

If this is true, SE screwed up AGAIN by being unable to comply with OEM BT kits (used in various models, incl BMW, Toyota, Lexus, Mini, Range Rover etc).
After the P800/P900/P910 fiasco, it seems the P990 despite many BT enhancements can still not do what a $50 SE phone (T6xx series) can do already for years!

I wanted to buy the P990 asap, assuming it would finally work, but if this is the case, no more SE for me, P910 will be my last. I was enough frustrated with my M3 & M5 BT system not working with a top of the line $$$ SE phone , while their cheap entry models do the job perfectly (without a phonebook, try calling someone while driving, it is a nightmare...not mentioning the random dropping connections all the time)

What the hell were they thinking at SE after the OEM BT owners complaints since the P800?

I am VERY disappointed, seems that SE quality is going down if they let this pass despite being aware of it. My money will be spent at the competition for their arrogance (they always reply: we did not test with BMW, but it works with an SE BT carkit... who cares about your rubbish bolt-on carkit if I have a $140.000 car where all is neatly integrated, and most phones work flawlessly with it, except your top-models I use outside the car for business purposes...)

so far, i have not been able to pair my p990 with my '06 X3, and i have been very disappointed with that. the BT system in my bmw has worked flawlessly with past phones (blackberry, slvr) and i, mistakenly, assumed it would work well with the p990.

check out the expansys forums - i have read that some people have been able to pair their p990 with their bmw.

i have a bit of a workaround for the moment - i have an hbh-662 BT headset with caller ID, so i can see who's calling me on that when my phone is in my purse. and i am using the voice dialing built in to the p990 to make calls (works well through the headset). not entirely satisfying, but okay for the moment...

NOT WORKING?! :|

I might be picking up a brand new 530i next week, with BT installed!

Does it work with Audi? Anyone? (didn't decide yet, either the 530i or an A6 3.2)

It's not like I'm gonna decide based on the P990i though !

I have just bought a MINI with OEM Bluetooth and P990i works perfect!

I can use the wheel buttons and the contacts automatically appears on my navigation screen as it should.

I have paired it too with my BMW X3 '04 and It works the same as my MINI, PERFECT.

I have had P800, P900, P910 and none of them where able to place a call trough the BMW bluetooth, but now... P990i works!!

My BMW and MINI are European models, without BMW Assist.

I guess we need to know what firmware you have in the P990 BUT also in the BMW!

so, any numbers to tell me?

my M5 is an April 2006 model, P910 BT works half of time, no phonebook, T630 works perfect with it.

you actually need to know the number of the ULF box of the BMW (the bluetooth brain)

number is only on sticker on the box (in the booth, behind carpet, next to radio and optionally TV tuner). Maybe dealer can see version in his menu when connecting to BMW diagnostic system, I am not sure.

or just say when your BMW (type?) was made (MM/YY), it may indicate too some things!

I remember a buddy's M3 from April 2003 did not display SMS, my Oct 2003 M3 did display them, using same phone!

It was the ULF box in the BMW which had a different firmware, can only be exchanged, not reflashed (box is OEM made by VISTEON)

great idea to list part numbers to see which bmw bluetooth modules work with the p990! i suggest everyone list their car model, year, the country in which you bought the car, bluetooth module part number, if they have navigation and/or voice command functionality, and bmw assist. and, of course, if you've gotten your p990 to successfully pair and connect to your bmw (and what level of functionality you get).

you may need to do some googling to find out how to get at your bluetooth module in your bmw. mine is easy since it's in the trunk on the left below an easily-removable panel.

so, i'll start.

- 2006 BMW X3 3.0i, purchased in U.S. (production date in mid-february)
- bluetooth part # 84 10 6 963 798
- no navigation
- has voice command for phone function only
- has bmw assist
- p990i seems to see the bmw, will accept the passkey, but will not make an actual connection. result: no p990i functionality with bmw bluetooth whatsoever.
- other phones that have worked flawlessly (quick connection, ability to use voice commands and steering-wheel controls, and full uploading of phone book): blackberry 8700c and motorola slvr

i guess if i really get desperate, and someone identifies the bmw bluetooth modules that DO work, i can buy one from bimmernav.com and install it so i can use my p990 with full functionality in my X3!

Audi A6 (2006 April), 2.7v6, BT carkit works better then the P910: now able to scroll P990 phonebook from the car.
All working OK, except for something that I just figured out: call waiting messes up the BT connection. Not sure on full details yet (need to test it bit more) but CW makes multi-media screen flip between navigation and phone, and [ignore] loses the call. As said, could be my error but looks iffy. All other works like a charm (better then P910 pairing).

Not sure if this is relevant to this topic but My Audi dealer (I own an A3 2.5 Quattro) installed as approved by Audi as he said the Parrot ck3100, that is completely integrated with the multifunction steering wheel, my radio-cd and the car's information screen in the dashboard. It works perfectly with my P990i (full phonebook automatic synchro, voice dialing, radio mute and I can also send my mp3's to my radio-cd through the bluetooth kit itself) The quality when streaming mp3's is crap (mono sound) but it;s nice to know you can do that as well. Needless to say that the parrot's price was less than half of the pre-installed Audi BT kit, that des not support all the aforementioned features. The latest firmware update of parrot even has a special menu for the P-series phones.

have now my P990i

tested on my M5 april 06 production:

IT DOES NOT WORK

- you cannot call from car (just immediately says "Call Ended" and does not store any dialed number in iDrive)
- does not transfer phonebook (just empty despite even sending phonebook manually over to BMW)
- cannot hang up incoming call (just does not cut out when you push iDrive button on hangup option)
- steering wheel phonebutton has absolutely no effect whenever pushed

otherwise, well, it does allow incoming calls and, if initiated from phone, allows also outgoing ones, but none of them can be hung up by the BMW... total rubbish implementation again.

tried all possible settings on phone (not many anyway), firmware is latest avail for P990.

Thank you SE for ignoring your customer base who was already complaining since the P800 that you should get your act together and make sure your top model works with OEM BT carkits.

Again they did completely ignore this call, and added a line in the manual stating you should only use SE BT carkits. All Txxx, Kxxx, Mxxx and Wxxx series work, but the 'for professionals' Pxxx series keep their reputation of being virtually useless with some OEM BT carkits, incredible but true.

No more Sony-Ericsson for me... I am fed up by this.

just now noticed it sometimes drops outgoing calls even if initiated from the p990

and if there is a second call, the system goes mute and there is nothing you can do but hang up the active call and reject the 2nd incoming to unblock your phone!

In the UK it is illegal to make telephone calls whilst driving if you actualy have to touch the phone to initiate the call or to answer the call.
