first of all i am thinking of joining '3' network on pay as you go and was wondering is it any good?
and second is it true that if you dont use all your top up in 30 days it vanishes?

I had a 3pay sim that I topped up with £10, just sold the sim with a phone and the credit was still active, must be at least 3 months since I topped up, so like other networks I imagine it will stay active for a while as long as you make a payable call/text etc. at least once a month/3 months/6 months (not sure of 3's policy here, but is 6 months on O2).

yeah i read tht it expired after 30 days but taking this from the '3'website:
there are two types of top ups :
cash top up and bundle top up.
cash top up it says no expirary date whereas bundle top up you have 30 days to use it.
would it be worth joining 3 just so i can use a k800i? |

I did a cash topup, which is why it's lasted.
I didn't really use the '3' sim card as I had my main O2 contract, got it really to have a play about and see what they were like.
3 were not too bad for coverage, and if you went out of a 3G area you went into 2G mode, which is currently supplied by O2 but I think someone else (Orange?) are taking that service over soon. The main annoyance I had with them is their habit of 'ringfencing' content, so you could only really access their content and not sites such as Esato. You can get limited internet access by paying I think it's £1 for an hour or £5 for 24 hours (someone correct me if I'm wrong there), but even then it's a list of 'pre-approved' websites you can access, not any one.

Might be better getting an unlocked 2.5g k790i if you like that phone and use it with your existing network.
If you're only really doing calls and texts you might as well stay where you are, not really worth swapping to 3g for that, imho it's still a bit overrated anyway unless you do some heavy duty mobile internet/downloading or mobile TV or something like that!
