From ghost detectors to shiitake mushrooms, ultraviolet ray meters to jewels, mobile phone straps are among Japan's most successful consumer products. And the trinkets used on them are getting sillier than ever.

Some bestellers:
The Ghost Detector mobile phone strap promises to detect any abnormal energy source in the air and shift into "barrier mode" to protect users from any savage spirits it picks up.
The Shiitake mushroom mobile strap uses authentic 40- to 60-year-old delicacies too small to be sent to pricey ryotei restaurants, but just right to hang off the end of a mobile phone.
Other popular straps include handmade glass baubles modeled on similar jewelry worn in Mesopotamia in 2500 BC and beads that act as a UV ray checker to let people know to take care when it's sunny.
Surprisingly, buying lots of these straps, especially the pricey ones, are older Japanese folk.
"Mobile phone straps first become popular in about 1997. Now, about 70 percent of all mobile phone users across Japan are said to decorate their phones with a strap. They've been popular and unpopular at various times since they first appeared, but I think it's fair to say that they are well and truly part of our lives now," says Atsushi Higuchi, operator of a store in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, that stocks over 10,000 different varieties of mobile phone-related merchandise".

I want one! Off to ebay......
EDIT -
http://www.himeyashop.com/pro[....]p/cPath/80_83/products_id/4632
Retail Price: Open Price
Size: 3cm (Body), 8x1.5cm (Strap)
Item Description:
This is a mobile phone strap with a ghost detector. You can search ghosts using this ghost detector! Just push the button and it starts to search for ghosts. It keeps blinking for about ten seconds. If the circumstance around you is normal, it stops blinking. But if something unusual, it cautions you by blinking in red with buzzer sounds! If you need to stay there, keep pushing the button for some seconds. "Barrier Mode" starts to expel ghosts out of your body then.

Ghost detector? I'm wanting a bulls**t detector to detect crap like that!
Other more useful 'detectors':
- Chav detector - flashes white for 10 seconds, then changes to a burberry colour if there are any chavs within range, and protects you by projecting an illusion that you're wearing a white tracksuit and chunky Argos jewellery so you blend in the the 'locals'
- Boy racer detector - Flashes a metallic blue 'Max Power' sign if a Saxo, 106, Fiesta, Corsa or even Nova is in range and in fitted with offensive body kits, nasty alloy wheels, an array of tacky looking LEDs in places like the windscreen washer jets, bits of scaffolding exhibiting themselves as 'powerful' exhausts, and driving around in a gear lower than necessary as it makes you look and sound oh-so-cool!
Anyone got any other ideas for detectors?

Not all phone straps in japan are as esoteric as ghost detectors and shiitake mushroom's, some are actually useful at the office.
a Japanese company which has rolled out a series of eight miniature stationery items that can double as phone straps.
The items, ranging from a ballpoint pen to an eraser, are 6cm long or less, and are designed to look the same as their regular-size counterparts.

That's much better dude . . . as I can eventually re-heat that in the oven . . unlike the 'ghost', one wherein I have to hunt one first myself . . .

I've never been quite keen on phone straps of any kind...they kind of get in the way if you know what i mean...and they look a bit gay (nothing against gays just that im straight)...but if it was something really practical...i mean very practicle something i could use all the time then maybe i would consider one.
