This is a mobile phone made from zirconia (an industrial, extremely tough ceramic). It challenges preconceived ideas of the properties and applications of ceramics.

Nice to see quality materials being used for the body of these phones. Still, I just don't think normal ceramic would cut if in durability (imagine if you dropped it), and zirconia is far too expensive for normal applications.

I think its about time we started seeing phones made from ceramics/glass/porcalain....phones have evolved enough now for manufacturers to start experimenting with other materials...i don't know if they are or not?...we keep seeing these amazing concepts popping up every year or so and nothing in terms of actual handsets.

Well, I read somewhere that the Moto KRZR will actually have a real glass panel on it instead of just glossy plastic; so it at least has happened to an extent.
The main thing holding back production of phones with higher quality materials is production cost and just the expense of the material itself compared to ever-reliable plastic. This is combined with the ever declining life span of phones.
