EDGE-Enabled Handsets Still Strong in Market
Even though EDGE-enabled handsets aren't as attractive as 3G or 4G technologies, it seems they still fit a niche, according to ABI Research, which says EDGE handsets will reach 148 million shipments this year. That will represent 14% of the cellphone market.
The attraction of EDGE-enabled handsets are that they are supported by a wider geographic coverage unlike other 3G or 4G technologies. EDGE offers near-broadband speeds on GSM networks. The technology has been added by many GSM networks as a simple software upgrade, thus making the attraction of EDGE handsets even more understandable.
While many other cellular broadband technologies are faster, they are also more expensive and time-consuming to implement. Given the millions of EDGE handsets being shipped this year, it will be a while before you see EDGE-enabled handsets mothballed. It goes to show you that technology doesn't have to be the latest and greatest to find its niche.
