Fellow Americans: Let's start our own GSM carrier! |

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of carrier "branding" that only delays a new phone long enough to cripple its features, fill it with useless crap, and make it buggy. And, oh yes, SIM-locking is also the suck
I want to start a new carrier, the rules of which are as follows:
- no contracts - only "pay as you go" or month-to-month
- no pointless content - just the basics: voice, voicemail, SMS, MMS, and an Internet connection, e.g., no stupid MEdia Net, T-Zones, etc.
- no phone sales - you bring in your own unlocked phone, we just give you the SIM card (with #, voicemail #, SMS preprogrammed) and then send the WAP/MMS settings OTA
- following the above - no "branding" or SIM-locking!
- and if we can make the FCC look the other way - all service is on 900/1800/2100 MHz
Who's with me?

Dare I call this a pipedream. Seriously though branding on phones is here to stay.
The I don't like about American carriers is them crippling features in a phone like WTF is up with that? If a phone's specs include then why remove most of it's functionality like OBEX?

actually branding phones wont stay long if ppl know what other cool stuffs are out there. back then hong kong carriers use to locked and brand their phones too. but then ppl started to import phones and stuff so awhile ago i dont know maybe like 10 yrs ago most of the carriers in hk stopped locking their phones and start to sell unlock unbrand phones. so now ppl can switch to what carriers they like depending on the price of the plan. |

I don't mind phone branding as it makes them cheaper. And unlocking services are fairly priced, so even if you pay for unbranding you usually still do better than buying an unlocked/unbranded phone.
I'm using T-Mobile out here in the wilds of northern New Jersey and New York City. My K790i gets a stronger signal then my quad-band Blackberry Pearl just about everywhere I've gone since getting the K790i. If we can ensure our new company's cell coverage beats Verizon on the east coast then count me in!! |
