o2 give me 1mb of free usage per month, and I should be able to check what I've used - but what does "Sent" and "Received" mean? Do I add them together to get total usage, or is it just one of them - and if so, which?!

add both together to get the total data amount, but notice, that it doesnt show u the "real" one, what the op offers u ( this case 1mb ). i can check the real one in the website of the op or give a call to the op center and the automat tells me.

Thanks for that - I think I'm a bit over - I seem to have sent and received 7812231b, which is about 7.5 mb!!

So, how do you mean the data counter doesn't show the "real" amount? What's it showing?

And when I send a pic message, does that add to the total too?

It would SUCK if they charge you for sent+received data (pure data not MMS), because when browsing pages, you ALWAYS send some data up. In the US you only get charged for downloaded data when browsing. Sending MMS is a different deal since it's per message.
