I can't get a straight answer from a person at Cingular or Sony Erricson. So I'll try here:

I'm on Cingular in the US East Coast (DC): I've heard from two of their reps two different things:

1.) I need GSM 850
2.) I do not need GSM 850

This of course effects my impending purchase of a k790/800 because I wouldn't have to wait for the k790a...

Can someone help straighten this out for me?

Thanks a bunch

I have Cingular (blue side) and my K790i works okay on it in and around Iowa City, IA. But, GSM 850 was never, ever deployed in Iowa as far as I know (AT&T only deployed GSM 1800 here). Since I do 99% of my calling in Iowa, the missing 850 band is not a major problem.

However, having said that, my T637 reception is much better in Cedar Rapids, IA than the K790i's is. However, I think part of it might be caused by some interference caused by EDGE or other networks that my locked (to Cingular Blue/AT&T Wireless) phone could not access before. I am hoping that this is fixed in a firmware update.

Since you are in DC, which is a major market, it is likely that Cingular was there before they bought AT&T Wireless. Cingular deployed a lot of GSM 850 everywhere, pre-merger. Because of that, it is more likely that there is GSM 850 there. However, that is just speculation. You should call customer service, and then ask them to transfer you to technical support. Then, ask the technical support rep. if there is any GSM 850 in your area. Also, ask him his opinion of using a 900/1800/1900 phone in the area.

You're most likely getting better reception, due to Cingular's 850 towers. Just because AT&T WS didn't put them up, doesn't mean that you can't pick them up, due to the fact that the merger happened.

rdnymllnsktr, my understanding is that nobody has every deployed GSM 850 here in eastern Iowa, including Cingular.
