Over the years there has been a number of posts about free GPRS data on O2. For whatever reason I benefit from it.

After my first month with the k800 on O2 GPRS it still seems to be free. I would like to switch to my G3 SIM card but concerned that this will change. Has anyone any experience of this?

I've never had to pay either for the past 2 years with heavy use. Doesn't seem to have changed with my 3G o2 sim.

O2 started to charge me out of the blue about 3 weeks ago.Came as a bit of a shock to see £9 data charges for a couple of small theme downloads over GPRS so stopped using it staraight away.Keep an eye on your online bill just in case.

Yeah similar thiong happened to me. Have been using it quite hard for a good couple of years now, then in April I got a £24 bill for GPRS alone! I stopped using ot for a while, now I'm on my 3G SIM, using 3G heavily again, downloading games, themes etc and according to my bill I've only used 224kb! lol But I'm keeping a close eye to my bill just in case

Cheers

they used to bundle unlimted data use with some tariffs back in the day...but now reversed it and have been taking it away from customers without informing them!!, if I were you id refer back to your contract to see what you are entitled to and ask them to reinstate it as its the reason you took it in the first place

Hi

I got a lengthy letter from Peter Erskine's office a couple of month's ago confirming that they are taking the 'free access' away from acounts now that they have sorted customers accounts onto a rationalised system.

The terms and conditions state they have to give you notice that they are about to charge but it doesn't have to be specific to you. All they have to do is send a text saying "the free trial is ending on DATE" and that's enough. It seems this is what they have been doing.

Unless they can prove to you that you have received any form of communications don't accept charges to your bill. It won't stop them applying new ones but if you get any nasty surprises it will help.

By the way the explanation I was given is that once charges are being applied you won't see anything under 3mb if they are all small amounts. But, if you do large amounts say half megs a time then over your allowance you will be charged. It's a sort of 'fair use' limit of 3 megs I suppose. This is certainly the case with the three accounts we have at home.

The thing I've noticed is that my online bill, via the Carphone Warehouse (CPW) doesnt have any database fields for GPRS traffic, only SMS, MMS, and Call charges. It's been like that for three years now.

I have emailled both o2 and CPW after a few months into the first year. o2 said that they will be charging and that I should speak to CPW directly. CPW didnt have a clue and said o2 would be charging (which is funny since I dont get a bill from o2, but from CPW via their website, which doesnt take into account any data charges).

3 years on... I havent been charged. Not that I've ever abused it though. Perhaps they havent noticed me!

the only relationship you have to o2 with your CPW contract is the the company logo on the bill, everything is done and dealt with inhouse for cpw customers, so they are chatting mess. Everything from the phone to the bills are down to them and have no affiliation with o2

I used about 16Mb (blame google mobile maps - wonderful but data hungry) on the first month with my new k800 but no charges on my bill. I have been with them for only a year so it can't be something really historic.

Still nervous about changing to the 3G card though in case this triggers the account.
