While most would rate this a "meh," I'd say the K510a is a very capable phone in its own right. It's perfect as a backup/alternate phone to something higher-end (e.g. the W810i). It's compact, only 3mm thicker than a RAZR and thus still pocketable. And it nicely and cheaply (the K510i goes for ~$200 unlocked/unbranded) covers the basics.
But I can't find the "a" model for sale anywhere, only the "i." We lowly Cingular-subscribed Americans need the 850 MHz band.
I contacted support, which had only this to say:

| With regards to your E-Mail about the K510a, this phone has been released in limited areas. You would need to contact a local cell phone dealer or vendor to purchase the phone. We do not have a list of specific vendors that sell this phone. |

That being the case, I hope Cingular picks this up. They need to stop worshipping Motorola and expand their SE line-up to include some low/mid-range phones like this.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of online retailers that carry "a" versions of SE phones. Usually these phones are reserved for other, smaller GSM carriers or canadian providers. It's very rare that you'll find an unbranded version of an "a" phone.
I got lucky in finding a brand new unlocked, unbranded version of the J300a for my mom. I just happen to find it at the right time as they are no longer being sold.
I was hoping to find the K510a and have it as a backup, but finding one is going to be really difiicult. |

Because the "a" uses a different frequency to the "i" so he wants the phone that will work where he is.
Sorry if you thought i was talking down to you. I never called you an idiot.
