Okay, many of us are complaining with a damaged or scratched camera lens, arent't we? So here's a simple guide for noobs on how to replace the camera lens.
DISCLAIMER: I do NOT claim any responsibility for any kind of damage caused to phones by mishandling. If you are not experienced enough in working with this stuff, do NOT try it yourself - you might end up damaging your fone's housing or worse, damaging the camera module.

Just to get this straight, this "lens" is just optically neutral, right? |

I would imagine that he means the lens isnt magnifying in any way. Its a simple non concave/convex lens!
The car in front is absolutely unique apart from the one behind it which is exactly the same. Murray Walker |

I am not sure we can cut lenses that small to be honest, the tracer will have a hard job doing so. You will require a specialist to be honest that can trace such a small lens. Unles the optician is willing to grind it down by hand...take a while and will look really bad.

That lense looks uncoated? Is it the replacement or original? I've been on the eye out for a glass lense for my cam.
Actually, it's not really a lense. A lense changes the path of light (magnification, wide angle etc), whereas this "lense" we want to be as optically neutral as possible to visible light, but opaque to IR. That's called an IR Cut Filter. That's important since Digital Cameras are sensitive to IR and without an IR cut filter the pictures will come out with a purple tinge.
See my IR tute if you are interested in doing actual IR photography with your cam IR digital photography

How ? if you dont mind me asking..
The K750i's lens cover surely does a fine job at protecting the lens.. ?

Its hard to imagine someone damaging the lense in their K750/W800.
A, they are covered. B, they are quite deep down.
But a good tutorial none the less. |

@etaab:
The 1st time i damaged my priginal protection lens, which was nothing but a thin, coated pit of plastic. It was replaced with another plastic lens, which didn't last either. So, finally I got myself a glass lens, and it's going fine!
@Max:
I guess i have answered ur query - it's a simple glass, uncoated - but makes no difference to the picture in any way.
@marques:
Well, to be honest, there are actually very few people willing to undetake such a flimsy job, but look around, and you'll find someone who'll agree to it for a very decent price. I got my replacement done at a watch-repairing shop, and yes, the person did have a tough time gringding it manually, but at the end of the day, it was a well-made effort, and the person was more than glad that he could be of some help to me!

@IRFCA_WDG-3A Yeah you will surely have to approach a watchmaker as an optician unless really hard up for money will probably turn this down.. I know I would..

Interesting, I guess then the IR cut filter is a coating on the lense itself, or else the camera auto-corrects for IR. The T610 had a sliver of glass you could remove (not the lense cover itself).
Good to know, I'll go your route to replace my lense then. Mine's more or less unscratched, only some marks in the coating not evident in pictures. but I can put that in my bro-in-laws phone (he scratched his badly).

AFAIK, the only role of the external lens is a glare-reduction coating - having replaced the lens, the only issue is a bit of a lens flare at night, when shoooting sources of light directly (eg, the headlights of an oncoming car).
The IR-cut filter should be located either inside the inner lens, or could be a coating on the lens itself.
I have tried IR fotograffy without the external lense, and it comes out fine.

Nice tutorial IRFCA_WDG-3A, I think I'll end up replacing my lens glass too. It has some tiny streaks but I haven't noticed any decrease in picture quality. so I'll wait and see if it gets any worse.
so it's a little hard to get the glass... mmhmm, that could be a problem for me here...
