Putting the phone in silent mode does it for me.

yes, it does seem to be region dependant.

My sons O2 K800 is silent whereas by Hong Kong generic can't be made to be silent, but I have chosen camera sound 4 which is quite funky

the reason the hong kong generics one cant be turned off is because in japan and china its illegal to manufcturer something capable of digital images without an audible tone when an image is taken, i'll leave it to your imagination to figure why
Mobile working solution:
Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue 6920G + DVB-T ExpressCard + Merlin XU870 + 3 5GB/mo Mobile Broadband
HTC TyTN II + T-Mo Flext 25 W'n'W

yes, thats usually the reason, however my K750 and K700 were also hong kong versions (with just chinese and English language and the strange symbols on the numeric keys) and yet they were silent shutters

I'm not in the least bit concerned anyway but thought I'd give the comparison between the two K800's in our house

In some countries it's law to have the camera shutter on because of some 'incidents'.

that would probably be because hutchinson whampoa! who run 3 are chinese and so they probably had the function to turn it off removed (just a guess but to me it sounds plausible)

i dont see why it should really make any sort of difference anyway, i think its quite a good idea to have shutter sounds

If you want to take a pic of someone without them knowing, simply cough right after pressing the button.
