The U.S. Patent Office has published a Sony application for a “Flipper Phone Configuration”. The device looks like a clamshell phone with the shell consisting of two parts. The outer part is like a frame and the inner one, where the screen and a few soft buttons are placed, looks like capable of being rotated at 360 degrees, relying on the picture.

I guess this is gonna be a TV mobile,
To watch TV u'll rotate the display so that u can watch TV even if the set is closed,
otherwise the display will b inside the clamshell like a normal folding....
OtherWise I can't find ne other possibilities why on earth would make such a phone!

DONT FORGET! with the patent pics they tend to make it a generic as possible and the final design will look nothing like the patent picture! [addsig]

Its just a patent submission. You don't need to give a nice design. Ugly or not the main thing is to quickly write your patent concept down get it register before someone did.

it will have some advantages, and it will appeal to some people.

the best thing to do right now is to wait and see what SE brings us.
its been under development for more then a year, so they better brings us something very special.
With Ericsson and Nokia gone: we must keep their spirits alive and buy JOLLA or YOTA
