Hi Guy's n Gals,
As you may know I am after a K800I, I am currently with Orange but had a look at a 3 version today and was pretty impressed with 3's online services plus I can use them where I am (the sales guy said he went out with someone in my village so knows for sure it works)
I also went into the Orange shop and now have some questions:

1: Just how bad is the 3 network and it's call centres?
2: Do 3 screw up your billing still if you pay by direct debit?
3: How good is the whole web access (Google etc) on 3? I was shown how you subscribe to get access to it on the handset and they do a 5mb per month access for free in one of there contracts.
4: Do you have to pay for playing games online with 3 like Socom?
5: Can you put any game you want on a 3 handset or can you only download them and install them of the 3 wap portal?
6: Is the media player on a 3 K800I handset the origional SE one or is it a 3 replacement?
7: The Orange shop manager told me that you have to manually switch between 2 and 3G Orange networks as the handsets don't do it, true?
8: Carphonewarehouse told me that ALL 3G phones on ALL networks will drop calls when switching from 3G to 2G networks, true?
9: I see that Orange now charge you £1.50 for itemised billing!!! Has anyone had to pay this on one of there new animal (racoon etc) contracts?
10: Is the Orange/ O2 3G services as good as the 3 3G network services?
11: The 3 sales guy told me that there is a new call centre in Glasgow which you can contact directly and they are closing there Mumby or wherever it is call centre and opening a new one up in Newcastle true?

Sorry for all the questions but I am really confused as to which network to go on, if I stick with Orange I'll have to get a new number which I don't want as there upgrades are pants to be blunt and will probably cost me £150 and I don't get any networks 3G coverage (according to there online coverage checkers) in my village apart from 3.
Please help me as I feel Orange have lost the plot a bit and are being left behind and all the other networks are winning awards whilst Orange seem to be more interested in giving awards.
ANY information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

Comon guy's, someone must have some answers. YOu don't have to answer all the questions.

I have also read that 3 are ditching O2 and have signed a deal to use Orange for it's UK roaming and they have signed a deal with Yahoo for unrestricted internet access.

3) AFAIK you can't use google or any other web like service on a 3 handset as they have it locked down to use there 'walled garden' which is 3's sevices only. This also stops you from using the this also stops you using the over the air update service (which updates the firmware) through the handset, it is greyed out on the options.

7) The handset does automatically switch between 2G and 3G. There is also and option to just have it on 2G (which i use) as it saves battery power.

From my previous experience i wouldn't touch 3 with a barge pole. They do offer nice contract deals though.

Thanks for the reply, what experience did you have with 3? Oh and before people go on about the walled garden have a read here:

And here about the Orange deal:

Can you still plug your 3 phone into your PC with the supplied cable and update it that way using the Sony Ericsson update service?

I'm sending my 3 phone back to them this week and going with O2. It was mainly because of the internet issue, although I found it almost impossible to understand their Customer Service people as well (although all the Sales Team seemed English, hmm...)
But that first article does seem to address the problem, although it doesnt sound as tho it is actually up and running yet, so who knows how long it could be...

Well, I've thought about it and decided to stick with Orange as there giving extra mins and text on there 18 month contracts and at the end of the day Orange are more reliable then 3.
Does anyone know how to contact the Orange retentions department? Thanks

I'm with O2 and they are giving their 3G service basically free with the K800i. Reasoning that 3G is still so garbage that the fact the K800 conects to GSM first and seems to stay connected even when a 3G signal is available.

im not quite sure what sonysandy means there. 3g is just the transmission medium, you pay the same data rates as you would on 2g but you get it faster. also i believe o2 allow you make video calls from your free minutes allowance which is nice.

Yup thats what i said, free minutes used for 3g or 2.5. No extra charge. 3G give you free voice mins and free video call mins, but they are seperate.
