Hey !

Esatos logo-uploader is a great thing but the big problem is that the logos has to be less than 3000 bytes. Most pictures look great with 256 colors but when you have to make the image 18 colors just to get under the file size limit, most pictures get really ugy. Is there some way to get around this, or a way to make your logos smaller in filesize with more colors ??

Thanks alot !

The reason why we have a 3000 byte limit is because this is a limit in phones when downloading logos via WAP. You can transfer much larger logos to your phone if you use IrDA, cable or :bt:

Some SP now allow larger Download's (up to about 30k with Orange GPRS) this is so MMS works properly. so if your sp has MMS you Should be able to DL large files.

Sure you can, but you can't download these images to the phone again via WAP. At least not the way phoneimage have structured their WAP pages.

Sorry to disagree laffen, but you're wrong. I've uploaded loads of backgrounds and screensavers larger than 3KB to www.phoneimage.com and then downloaded via WAP using , orange and Halebop gateways. The largest file I downloaded from there was about 32KB.

@Korova

OK. You are not able to view the image displayed on a WAP page if it's larger than 3000 bytes. But you can link directly to any image (less than 30000 byte). For 3000++ images you are given the option to save the image in MyPictures, but you won't be able to preview the image before it's downloaded. And most old WAP gateways has a limit 2720 byte limit.

Oh come on laffen, anybody who's visited the screensaver section here at Esato via WAP knows what you've just told us! I never said you could view them via WAP, I said you could download them, something you said couldn't be done! If you haven't got anything relevant or NEW to tell us, it's probably best to stick to what you are good at...

Ooohhkay, so what this means is:

If I use a laptop with an IR port and the Sony Ericsson Image Editor program I can transfer logos to my phone with 256 colours, and they will look better on my phone than the ones I had to optimize to 18 colours because of the 3K file size limit.

Is this the right way to understand this ?

I use Orange France GPRS and I can't download crap from Esato unless I use my laptop using orange.fr as the APN.

@Korova

Why so negative?

Ericsson reccomends the following when developing WAP pages:
"Ensure by reducing the number of colors or dither percentage that the
picture file size does not exceed approx. 2720 Bytes, or it will not pass the older WAP gateways that many network operators still today
provide."

This may have changed slightly since the September release of the document, but for most users, the limit is still there. And because most visitors to Esato don't read the instructions and FAQ before downloading content from the site, we receive dozens of mails every day about this problem. Wouldn't like to get more of these..

@laffen

I'm negative?

This topic is called - Why is the limit 3000 bytes for logos ? - is there a way around this ?

I was only trying to answer the, "is there a way around this ?", part, which, of course is what I did. I was then completely contradicted by you, saying that it couldn't be done.

Why so negative?

I'm sure you have plenty of knowledge on what recommends and doesn't recommend, I had already thanked you for the same info in the link (to my topic on 35KB+ WAP gateways) you included in your earlier post.

Don't get me wrong, I know who you are, and I admire the way you keep this awesome site running. It's brilliant the way you cater for the majority, but if another site can offer something you can't, even if it is for a minority, then just deal with it. To be fair, phoneimage is a rather poor site, especially when compared with the quality of this site, but if it serves a purpose to some people, all well and good.

As for the issue of not enough people using the FAQ section, or the Search function, please read this.

I hope this helps.
