I've only seen mention of Microsoft One Care once a long while back when someone was looking for a beta
anyway, now it seems you can trial it officially and from tomorrow (1st June) you can buy it in US and elsewhere in the coming months
One Care is Microsofts own solution for firewall, antivirus and antispyware and will cost $49.99 for a 3 pc licence.
I've been using Norton Internet Security for the last few years which includes those components as well as anti spam but if the Microsoft offering works as well as NIS then for the cost and taking into consideration the numbers of PC's in my house, I'll be looking very closely at this...

All I can recommend is AntiVir.
It's free and has great features
I like it so much I paid for the pay version which was around 10 pounds for 2 years.
It catches viruses BEFORE you receive them.

Does nobody think this is a little off, coming from Microsoft?
Charging you extra money to add (dubious) protection against weaknesses in the very operating system they make and sell?
Shouldn't these things be part of the OS as standard as everybody needs such protection in the Windows world...
Or maybe they should just make thier OS more secure in the first place, so such add-ons aren't so essential.

I have to say that when writing the post I thought it was a little ironic for the same reasons you have given!

Hmmm... I am familiar with some folks who work MS tech support for security related issues,...and OneCare seems to be a pretty favoured piece of software with these chaps...and mind you , these guys prefer Firefox and Avant to IE...so I wouldnt really label them as brand loyalists, just because they work on MS tech support

I've seen a lot of basic stuff missed by ms antispyware that adaware get's everytime.
Adaware is free, Zone alarm is free, ad AVG antivirus are all free for home use, amongst other products of course.
I see little need to pay for such protection when many of the free products do such a brilliant job. Norton's itself is rather verbose and many of it's components are largely unecessary, yet hog undue system resources. I don't expect microsoft to be any better.

Having dealt with Microsoft Antispyware and later Windows Defender, I can assure that these products are excellent/Defender had some update issues which was a PITA but all should be sorted by now..
