I Can't really be arsed going through all the different phones sony will be releasing over the year, so to sum my question up, is sony going to be competing with the N80 at all this year?

Im seriously considering upgrading to the N80....

And is it me, or has sony got FAR TOO MANY 'walkman branded' phones to be coming out soon. Just going on their website, and they all look the same to me, apart from the W950i which is a tad bit unique.
But as it has no camera (and no 3/3.2 mgp camera ), i will not be purchasing it for sure.

And if there are any major downsides on the N80, displaying it in this thread would be greatful too.

Cheers

Well that more or less answers my question lol.

Probably still going with the N80...the p990i is just not my kinda phone! (but who cares ).

If i was SE. i'd release this:

3.2mgp camera (K800i)
4GB internal storage (W950i)
Touch screen with stylus (M600i)
Symbian os with wi-fi built in for web browsing(P990i).

But don't think thats gonna happen anytime soon!
I'd call it the L1000i lol.

I've got an N80 and WiFi is, well, not that great.

My PC laptop, Mac iBook and even the Samsung Q1 UMPC all manage to get a fantastic signal from my router. The N80 starts to drop rapidly, and can even get to no signal, by just moving downstairs and through a couple of walls. The antenna must be seriously weak because the others, and even my crappy Wireless detecting keyfob, work fine.

This also creates problems in WiFi hotspots out and about, as you actually need to know where the antenna is to have a good chance of getting a solid and reliable connection. However the biggest problem is the MASSIVE drain on battery power.

I do still massively appreciate having the facility, but wonder how well it's going to work on the P990i when it arrives. WiFi is good to have, but even the 9500/9300 Communicator's weren't great. I can't recall Windows Mobile devices being great either.

I sincerely hope you are wrong about the P990. I've never used wifi on a pocketpc device, but I use the interenet via a bluetooth activesync connection - works flawlessly. GPRS also works flawlessly.

But wifi is a different beast. Nevertheless despite what you say, I'm expecting the wifi to work well, since SE phones in my experience always perform the way they are designed, unlike Nokia

@Laher: As far as I know Sony won't be releasing any phone in the near future.

Read somewhere on Esato, forgot where exactly, but I remembered it saying that Bluetooth is at its peak at the moment in SE's eyes, and now SE is planning on making Wi-fi the next bluetooth (replacemant).

Really?

Read here for the latest in Hi-Speed BT. SE as part of the BT Special Interest Group would be well aware of this.

In any tiny device, the antenna is an issue - as is battery life. On the 9300i/9500 you can adjust the power from weak to extra weak (!) and I am not sure the P990 can really improve much on this, as the result is a serious hit on battery life.

The best you can hope for are adjustable power levels, so you can boost the power if you can afford the battery life hit (for example, using it at home/office with a power supply nearby or on a train with onboard power points).

To get back to the original post - as you can see not much negative about the N80. Is really a nice allarounder. In my opinion Edge is the biggest advantage by far over the majority of Se cells. I am still puzzled why Se is so slow at implementing it. It amuses me to read about people still using gprs (3g is not really a issue) I use to surf via Gprs for 3+ years now is history. Wap browsing on Edge is more like memory browsing. On occassion I forget I am on the net. :D
