Microsoft is making a pitch for the jpeg picture market with a rival Windows Media Photo format which will be supported in Windows Vista and made available for XP users.

ESATO NEWS

Microsoft is pitching the main advantage of its format better picture, smaller file - at mobile phones and digital cameras where storage space may be a consideration.A smaller file, can also print faster, transfer faster and help conserve battery life on devices.Making a file that is smaller has all kinds of benefits."

Ralf Mueller of Sony Ericsson seemed enthusiastic. He said his company would "look into the new format just as his company looked into supporting Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Video". However, he added: "Considering our development cycle, I could not see us supporting Windows Media Photo before 2008.A full Windows Media Photo Specification (.doc) is available via this page.

Microsoft trying to take over yet again, but if these promises of smaller file sizes are true that it could be OK. I can't see this being widely adopted, and I bet that the photos will be pretty badly compressed.

OMG,DRM on pictures.
Technically it may be superior and has many nice features at first look.
but evil empire will cripple it with DRM like in wma/wmv.

Why would you DRM a photo?

Erm, because commercially available photos are protected by the same copyright laws as commercially available audio and video files.

Do you think every picture you see in print is free to reproduce?

If this is true, then I'm afraid Sony Ericsson are going backwards.

Might have to start looking at phone companies that support open formats and software, like Motorola.

In fact, check this out:

Nokia liberates the S60 browser source code
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060525-6918.html

Nokia has released the source code of its S60 WebKit, the core rendering component utilized by the company's web browser for mobile devices. The S60 WebKit is based on the WebCore HTML rendering framework used in Apple's Safari web browser, which is in turn based on the KHTML component used by the Linux-based Konqueror web browser.

This is what SE should be doing - making and setting industry standard technologies.
