Hi people,
just started this thread out of curiosity...
w900 and w800 come in ´crystal´ boxes with the walkman brand and everything... I thought that was standart for walkman phones but w810 comes in a ´regular´ box. Why is that? Why give up the crystal box? Its was a nice feature... |

and its breakable.. so i cant see any point why they think itll protect their phone. and case would still break. i guess silicone case is more of a protective covering than that of the crystal case.

W800 - ORANGE plastic container
W550 - ORANGE box
W900 - BLACK plastic container
W810 - BLACK box
Will the upcoming Walkman phones follow this "pattern"?

I think the w950 is more likely to come in a ´crystal´ box. The first was w800 than w900 (the slide phone with plastic box) and now the w950(smart music phone in a plastic box). Its like, each class of models has one phone with crystal box. But i might be wrong, perhaps has given up the plastic and will use cardboard from now on... that would be kinda sad, the crystal box was cool. I bet everyone that bought a w800 kept the plastic box but i cant say the same about cardboard boxes... |

W900 is not a sliding phone but swivel.
And W550 is the first swivel Walkman, yet it comes in a box. |

my bet (actually, more like wishful thinking): the w850 and w950 in plastic tubes (like the first w800 containers)/boxes
everything else (lower indices than 800) would come in cardboard boxes
and yeah. pity my w810 came in a cardboard box |

I think the crystal box breaks/cracks easy during transport and its hard to store a lot because its not totally flat. I am happy with the regular boxes. |

The packaging was due to SE wanting to experiment with putting them on shelves inside stores (primarily Sony Centre's) so people would buy them like any other Walkman/music player.
I don't know how successful this was, but the change to a cardboard box might give the answer! It could also be that SE wants to save money, or that they'll produce them in both - to the request of their customer (network or distributor). For most retailers, where the boxes are kept 'out back', the cardboard makes more sense.
Do we really get that impressed with the packaging that we're indirectly paying more for?!
