Just something i've wondered for a long while now,

why if you are coming up to (as in camera facing towards you) do people slow down for it?

Gatso cams cant take on coming pics....

thought that was a well known thing?

being a Gatso!

these however can take on coming pics so watch out....

I don't know about where you live, Reg, but I always slow down for them because if you see one pointing towards you, there's usually another one on the other side of the road a bit further up pointing in the right direction to get you!

Whoah at least you can see them kilometers away, ours are grey like a simple pole and sometimes not easy to find.

Here is an example on why people are slowing down: I pass allmost everyday on one of those radars, while it never took a picture of someone cars speeding it is actually active (an "anti-radar" system detects it). No one really known it's purpose or function but people slow down in case, one day, it might just take pictures.

Even if I know that a particular one can't take front shots, I will still slow down, just in case ... .

not round here....

cams are very few and far between, so annoys me that people dont know how they work!

ah well.. roll on when they start taking em down cuz there making too much wonga.

I also dont get how truvelos are allowed, it takes a pic of the driver aswell as the car, surely that an invasion of privacy?

@Jim, ours were grey until a few years ago when they made them all yellow so we could see them.

i like how cams create more accidents than they stop though! good work....

I'm the same as Jim, I slow down 'just in case', I've been flashed by a one on the other side of the road before, though didn't hear anything from it thankfully.

I value my licence too much! I don't want to put it to the test

I got once flashed but I was next of another car so they couldn't determine who whas speeding , maybe that was your case.

The only cameras I'm weary of are those bloody SPECS devices. However, the way to beat/cheat them if you are going "a bit too fast" is just before you get to the second one, to pull in right behind a truck until you are past the camera. But be on the lookout as there are sometimes a third camera a bit further on.

Obviously you're screwed if there is no large truck to hide behind...

@Xugaa

It works like this. Radar detects your speed and if it exceeds the calibrated limit set in the camera, then two timed photos gets taken. On the road there are measured lines painted. Now they comapre the two photos and then it gets calculated on the distance you have traveled, using the measured lines as guide and the time delay between the two photos. then it is simple maths to calculate your speed.

I slow down when heading towards a gatso as a friend got three points for driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone while heading towards it. he even has the picture to prove it. It was a gatso as its about 500yds from where i live.

there is usually a small leeway of 10% plus 2mph before you get snapped. ie in a 40 mph zone it would be 40+10%+2=46 so over 46mph and you are busted.

Anyway, check out this site for all your speed camera needs...

it's the appearance that makes people slow down... just having a empty camera cabinet can also be enough... until recently here in Sweden there have been alot of camera cabinets, but only around four cameras that have been moved between the cabinets... but still, people slow down at theese points. Now they have started to replace these cabinets with new ones, all have cameras, but they are only activated at certain periods or else it would have taken a lot of time going through all speeding photos.

here is how the old looked like:

and here is the new cabinets, each with a digital camera inside:
