True, so the answer to your question is undoubtedly Nokia.
However i believe Ericsson had a massive head start on Nokia
*not that it helped mobile phone sales any, but still*

Nokia was first long before they started making mobiles. The sold rubber boots and paper products. Only in the early to mid 90's did they go into the telecom market. However, they were one paycheck away from being purchased by L.M. Ericsson in the early days.

How about the fact that I know the history and you don't. I live in Finland. By the way, Nokia phones comes from there. Second, did you know the CEO of Nokia killed himself and then they turned the corner and became profitable on the backs of the 2110 and 2110i series phone. Before you make a joke or a ridiculous statement, you should know what you are talking about.

Nokia started off in forestry in the 1860's, and later moved into making paper, rubber, and electrical cables. By the 1980s it was a shapeless conglomerate that made everything from tyres to TVs. It also made mobile phones, which took off after the establishment of a multinational cellular network by a consortium of Scandinavian state operators. This network, which had low subscription rates and country-to-country roaming, gave the Scandinavians a clear edge when it came to setting up Europe-wide networks based on the digital GSM standard in the early 1990s. (Other European countries, along with Japan and America, fell behind, having adopted proprietary systems.) Initially, GSM was known as the “Great Software Monster”, because it was so complex, and making it work proved harder than expected. But Nokia’s GSM team, led by Jorma Ollila, got it to work. Mr Ollila was made chief executive, and once Nokia concentrated on mobiles, it shot ahead of rivals.

-----------------------

From the opening of his repair shop for telegraph equipment in 1876, Lars Magnus Ericsson envisioned the great potential of phones, and also saw the need to improve the technical quality.

Ericsson contributed to making Stockholm the world's most telephone dense city by the late 1800s. Ever since, it has been Ericsson's firm conviction that communication is a basic human need. Ericsson is the only company in the world offering systems for all major mobile communication standards, actively promoting standardization and open systems.

-----------------------
So Ericsson appeared around 10 years after Nokia. Ericsson was involved in telecomunications from the very beginning though.

@sap,mine was not a sarcastic comment.i was really surprised by the info and had a laugh at the thought that once nokia was not doing well that ericsson had almost bought it...and now nokia is most profitable than any other phone manufacturer.
I know, nokia is from Finland. Here, in India, almost 9 out of every 10 handset is a nokia.India is a big market for nokia...they are even setting up a manufacturing plant in India.

From Wiki: Nokia was "born" in 1865 and Ericsson in 1876.
