P990 is not yet out. But I guess it's not too early to start discussing our wishes for the successor of the P990 - maybe it's even too late to influence the design of the successor but I thought it would be interesting to identify our common wishes. Who knows SE may reflect it in their future P series if this group come up with some specific and convincing recommendations.

I am not good at programming so I wonder if someone can write http code and post here for casting votes and collecting the results. I will try to list some examples below. Suggest if you have other idea.

1. Physcial size
a. height (p990 is 114mm) - how much shorter?
- okay with current height
- 5mm
- 10mm
- 15mm
- 20mm
- 25mm

b. width (p990 is 57mm) - how much narrower?
- okay with current width
- 2mm
- 4mm
- 6mm
- 8mm
- 10mm

c. depth (p990 is 26mm) - how much shallow?
- okay with current depth
- 2mm
- 4mm
- 6mm
- 8mm
- 10mm
- thinest as possible

2. Camera(current 2MP)

- okay with current one
- 3.2M
- 5M , I can afford additional cost of up to:
.$50
.$100
.$150
.$200
- beyond
- don't care

3. Video - current QVGA (320x240)? 16fps?
- okay with current resolution
- VGA with 32fps
- beyond
- don't care

4. QWERTY keyboard
- want
.on Body
.on Flip
.don't care where
- don't want
- don't care

5. GPS function
- a must
- don't care

6. Please suggest other categories (body color etc)

I would personally vote for
height - 15mm
width - 4mm
depth - 6mm
camera - 5MP - I can afford up to US$150 more to pay for it (I think it's technically feasible to integrate 5MP in the size I wished above. Here is the math: The volume of Samsung P300 phone is about 42CC which has 1.3MP camera with BT among other functions. The volume of Sony DSC-T7 is about 82CC which is 5MP camera. The total volume for the two is only about 124CC - yet it's got two LCD pannels, two batteries and other redundancies. P990 is about 168CC. IMHO if SE cannot reduce the volume (even with 5MP) to my wishes or close to it, their design team is not doing its homework)

Phones are becoming smaller and lighter but P series has not been evolved in terms of volume and weight. Although additonal functions
have been added in the P successor models, other phone companies has been doing the same thing yet reduces physical sizes. I personally do not really wish the size of LCD panel being shrinked but still a few millimeters can be reduced width-wise and more for the height and even more for the thickness.

BTW, P990 seems already obsolete in some performance - e.g., Nokia N93 has 3.2MP and VGA video with 32fps with 3x optical zoom 802.11b/g TV-OUT among others. I watched the video taken with N93 and it seemed like professional one.

I'd say
Same hieght, 2mm less width or maybe not and 6mm less depth. 3.2MP QVGA [B]30[\\B]fps.
Your idea about merging the camera and phone reulting is nomething smaller than the P990 isn't accurate and wouldn't exactly work.
I don't want a signature anymore.

The main thing that is missing from the P990 (and all SE phones AFAIK) is GPS.

For the love of God - PLEASE inclusde GPS in the next P series phone!

I agree with peterkay. Make it thin! And SE does need one, apart from the W950 and M600 which are not mass market phones, to satisfy the public's need.

@energetic

I guess SE may have already started initial design of the successor - initial decision of what functions to be upgraded and what new functions to be included. In parallel the design artists may have already started playing twicking p990 into different shapes. It should take months before they can come up with a prototype. Does anyone have practical experience in phone design industry?

BTW, I updated my orig post at the top with others' opinion.

I still don't see why a business phone should have a camera. Dump it. IR?, Dump it. Poncy headphone sockets?. It's got BT, dump it. In fact, by the time teh P100 would be out, Wi-fi will have completely taken over. Dump the BT too! GPS could be built into a car holder. It's not needed on the main phone. Complicated "power" socket? Dump it. the bloomin phone costs over £400. You can afford to make on lousy special connector (still for a standard SE charger of course!).

Trim the fat, and it could be a great looking, slimline, powerpacked masterpiece.

Pikey - why do you label it 'a business phone' ? - I think P-series are brilliant phones - nothing to do with business useage. - in fact hardy use phone features at all LOL

I didn't. SE did. I just happen to agree with them!

Anyway, if a camera is so desperately needed, they can always do a plug-in one.....

The P990 is fine as it is, but a better camera say 3.2MP, better video quality, a little less bulk, and it'll be perfect.

kgtjan, where did you get that video the N93 recorded? That's probably going to be my next phone so I'm quiet interested to check it out..

As for the P series.. I think that the size is ok as it is.. The N93 you mentioned is actually bigger AND heavier! Without it making the phone any less usefull I suppose.

Regarding the Nokia N93 video, I found it at gsmarena.com under Nokia N93. Here is the original msg postd on April 26:

"anyone wanna see video recorded by the nokia n93 ? then click this link http://62.61.85.73/nstudio_ws/...ng_space.wmv , but pls remember that the video is meant for streaming , so this is not the highest quality u can get out of it , and this is recorded using a prototype"

if the http link above is not working, try this:

Thanks.

That wasn't bad at all... but not exactlty DVD quality. Hope Nokia'll keep their promise in the final device.
