way to unlock my se v600i without void warranty? |

hi,
i know that this IS possible - but i don't want to waste money calling up vodafone helpline + then have them playing that they can't understand what i'm on about because they're chinese/indian or whatever...so can i just take my phone into any old vodafone shop and get it unlocked, or do i have to call vodafone up? - i know that this shouldn't void the warranty atall...but may...anyone work for vodafone, or done the same as me with the same or different phone?
thanks everyone in advance,

If you don't want to void the warranty then you will have to speak to Vodafone. Take the handset into one of their shops that has a repair centre and ask them to unlock it for you. There may be a charge for this, usually around £20. However, if I recall correctly, they may wave the charge if you say you are going overseas for a while and need it unlocked. Don't take that last part as gospel though.
One more thing, the next time you post you might like to consider that Esato has a large number of members from India and I daresay there are a few Chinese people here too. Whilst I'm sure you have nothing against such people you might like to construct your posts in a way that doesn't make it look like you are insulting them.

thankyou very much. and i do know about the chinese community etc. on esato - and i am very sorry if i do hurt their feelings - but i am almost certain that vodafone have told the people that work in their call centres to say things like that. if anyone knows otherwise - then i am extremely sorry.
thanks again and i'll be going in there soon. erm...but if your going abroad, wouldn't they just want you to use their service still and pay extra money?
cheers anyway, and sorry once again if i have hurt anyones feelings, i certainly did not me to. |

As I said I'm not terribly sure about the overseas gambit, it may work and it may not. I think the reasoning behind it is that if you say you are going overseas for several months rather than just a week or two it makes more sense for you to be using a local network abroad.

yeah ok - think i might try that as i've just had a quote from vodafone saying that as i haven't been a vodafone user for 12 months yet then i have to pay a fee of £19.99 - alright price i suppose - especially to keep the warranty - but may just wait the year, and then go over to virgin mobile (when they have their 3g sorted out) at the end of the year once i've been a user for 12 months - anyway - i'll still try it - doesn't really seem worth £19.99 when i could unlock it for free...but nevermind :S - well it is like about 500 texts int it? so maybe i'll just use that kinda money for texts till the end of this year - cuz i'm gonna have to text + call ALOT to get anything out of unlocking atm!
cheers! |

ok so your looking to unlock your phone and keep the warranty,
how cheap do you expect it to be? i think £20's not a lot of money considering you want KEEP the warranty. 2ndly ive used vodafone for ages and think they're call centres are fine, maybe the fact you think £20 is TOO much to unlock the phone, is clouding your judgement about the call centre workers. |

i'm sorry mate, only 13 not alot of money spinning around...so i've gotta save every penny...might pay though...sorry if i offended you! also i believe that if they expect me to pay 20quid out to unlock it they shouldn't charge so much for my texts to people!

im assuming you brought your phone pay as you go? the problem is you get the phone heavily subsided from the operator (the price sim free is quite expensive) so to recoup their costs they dont want you to run to another operator, so you can understand that they are going to charge you something.
secondly...about prices..it is a business unfortunately...the market dictates this, so if you dont like it...go elsewhere..im not happy with the price of diesel/mot/insurance/tax for my car, but i know i like the privilage of having it..so i put up with these costs.
as your only 13 i understand money is tight..maybe you should of gone for a cheaper phone? also you are going to get flamed if you make unjust comments. |

To be fair there isn't a huge amount one can do where mobile networks are concerned because one is effectively limited to a certain pool of networks. The five main networks are all reasonably similar when it comes to pricing. Where you save with one you typically pay more for something else. The MVNOs can be cheaper, but they don't have as wide a selection of handsets and/or services as the main networks.
Texting is vastly overpriced in my opinion. I was once told by someone who worked for one of the big UK networks that it costs around 1p for the network to send a text, perhaps less. If you are being charged 10p per text, that's a rather hefty markup!

corporations do not care. all they care about is making money. if they could make more money by doing something ..they would do it
i know texting is vastly over priced...10p was the standard, now most do for 12p 20% increase is quite a bit
the OP should have thought about what he wanted his phone for...o2 still do 300 text per month.. three are always pretty cheap.
the thing is, whenever you make a desicion u have to think about everything.
eg when you get a contract...what price plan do you want, what phone do you want.
then u choose which one is more important to you. to me it is the phone.
the op chose a phone, then complained about the pricing, you cant have your cake and eat it.

ok...might get unlocked in the summer when virgin launches their 3g network...but otherwise i'm waiting till the end of the year, and buying txt packs instead - saved quite heavily in last couple of days!

This is definitely good advice, forward planning is very important. It might save you quite a bit in the long run if you look at the different tariffs and options carefully befoe buying a new mobile.

I think there is an element of truth in this depending upon what standard of handset you want. The thing is we should be able to have good handsets along with good prices, but we don't seem to make our voices heard on the matter. The EU is looking into romaing charges, which is good news for customers, but ideally the networks would be more competitive.
I don't know if I would go so far as to call the big UK networks a cartel, but certainly competition between them isn't very apparent to me.

personally i think things have got a lot better, ive never paid for my phone, always get it free...even when i had the w900i (which was the most expensive phone in dec)
u talk with your money
if you dont like something dont buy it, EVENTUALLY they will have to cut prices. i think the problem is that mobile operators over spent greatly on 3g licenses, and have to recoup their costs somewhere.
im not sticking up for the companies, i would love it to be cheaper, but we are more likely to see more features per a price plan, rather than the price plan being reduced
eg 200 mins anytime roughly £30,
to be more competitive they might throw in some msg's/video calls, but still retain the £30 if that makes sense!
like voda's current offer, after 7pm hour call only 3 mins charge, i think that is fantastic...and its the only thing keeping me there |

The handset side of things is probably the best part because we can get very expensive handsets either free or very cheap.

I would agree with voting with your wallet, but only to an extent. Because the networks have rather similar prices it means that as you leave one network to protet their prices you are effectively joining another and lending support to their prices. However, if enough people leave a network it might be enough to convince them to be more competitive.
3G licenses haven't really impacted the prices of calls or texts in my opinion. I think the networks are probably going to look to content e.g. music, videos, etc to recoup their license fees.

Offering more for the same price is fair enough, but then that is only good value if you actually use those features. One of the worst areas in the UK is data, we seem to have very high data charges, even when compared with some other European countries never mind Asia and North America.

im not a fan of the 18 month contracts (im not sure about other operators) but voda, is strongly promoting them-the offers (tv on your phone, 3 mins for an hour thing are ONLY available on voda)
i agree completely with the data charges we have here, they are crazy..no operator would reduce their prices (unless to capture a market share -hutinson) its like a cartel i would say though, 200 mins any time, is approx 30 quid any network...but you can only get some of the phones on certain operators -w900/v800 being the notable ones imo, i was surprised that the w900 is not in black with voda...
if you are JUST looking for a good contract, there are a lot of good cash back deals, two years ago i got a 12 month contract 750 mins off peak (t-mobile) absolutely free -paid for my contract upfront, and then after a month claimed it back from the dealer.
side note -n80 fantastic phone imo, wifi (yeah no more crazy data charges..my place of study is a wifi hot bed!)
mp3 player..and its a phone!
i think it will be a few years until prices are reduced, but they will get reduced-if you know anything about the adsl market in the uk, 4 years ago it was ridiculously high..after some competition, it is now dirt yeah (i pay £9.99 for 1mb unlimited btw). i also feel as the market for mobiles is extremely saturated, there will be a point, where there will be no extra feautures needed (after you have a camera/video recorder/mp3/wifi what more could your want?!!) on this note i would like to see what SE will respond with. |
