Hi phone fans

Sometimes phone companies seem to deliberately create problems with phones just so that you buy the next thing along. No more! Why should I buy the next latest phone if I'm going to discover wierd limitations a few months down the road... again?!

Examples from my k750i:

- you can't charge the phone with the headphones plugged in; can't use it so easily as an mp3 player
- the joypads always break; deliberate?
- closed/awkward firmware. Will probably be unsupported soon. What about the next phone to come along? Why don't all SE phones have the scroll wheel?
- GPRS lock-in. You should be able to connect to your computer easily with bluetooth. Instead they make it deliberately hard so you have to pay for expensive GPRS. Things like floAT shouldn't have to exist.
- bluetooth firmware lock-in. There will always be new bluetooth features coming out. A2DP stereo is a good example. It's only a software feature that needs to be upgraded - yet you're forced to go out and buy a new phone - DON'T SUCK IT DOWN ANYMORE!

- all the usual carrier anti-trust associated. Easymobile.com no doubt has come under attack and imtimidation for it's 15p cross, 3p same net calls, 1p,5p txts. See oftcom. Personally I go pay as you go, keep usage low and buy phones unlocked.

There's no reason why we couldn't have an open firmware (inc. bluetooth) phone, scroll-wheel, modular upgradable camera, razor thin, non-proprietary standard connectors phone. This will never happen because they know by tying us to their licensed accessories or licensed design accessories they can make more money.

So, what do I suggest?

--> More critical consumerism! When you buy you next phone, or review it, or post on esato consider:
- is the bluetooth firmware upgradable? Will it work with next years equipment?
- is the firmware a lock-in?
- will it break next month?
- standard connectors? Are the accessories a rip off? If they are do you avoid the phone on principle?

How can we simpify these lessons for stupid people?

Basically, if you don't like it (modern technology) don't buy it. Sure there are some little bugs here and there but look a what you're getting. I would like to remind all that it wasn't that long ago that mobile phones had a battery life of less than a day, nothing more than a basic B/W LCD display, no IR, no bluetooth, no customised ring tones, no SMS, no camera, no games, were bulky and heavy, etc, ect. Now we all get worked up because of silly little probs with features that are really nothing more than gimics. Generally speaking, all mobiles still perform their main task of working as mobile telephones.

There are bound to be teething troubles with new models, though agreed there is more to go wrong in a modern camera/mp3 player/radio/TV/Phone than in a 3310

Though if you're not happy, I've got a nice basic 3410 I'll swap for your K750i!

Dj's two cents say..That this guy is partly right and wrong...!

Technology has its price..If the Phone Manufactures don't lock a few options then how will they entice new customers..Everyone will be like..Hell This new one looks just as good as my present...so why should I upgrade....!

When you go and buy Cars- One model Older cannot have all the features that you can have in the latest model...However Certain things cannot be Retrofitted...!

Why is it that PS 1 cannot play PS2 Games..Ya I know it has CD Drive Lens ( PS 1) as compared with a DVD Lens ( PS2)...But If I can unlock that and use my PS 2 Games in a PS1...Why would I go for a PS2 in the first place..!
Even the upcoming PS 3 will play PS 1 / PS 2 games but they cannot play PS 3 games....

So The Point here is that you should be willing to pay the price of technology or choose a model that gonna keep your heart and grubby hands happy for a long time unless something really cool comes your way..!

And Mohit, I don't mean to be rude...But since this Public Forum..Everyone has the right to express their opinions...So please be a little considerate next time...!

it's all about COMPROMISE.

you want better quality and build.

but are u willing to lose out on certain features because developers have to spend time on build quality and stuff?

more importantly, are u willing to pay a FORTUNE more for it just to have better build quality?
to make a phone perfect can be done, but u know how much it will cost? to solve the joystick problem is just one problem. a phone might have at least thousands of problems, fixing all of them can be done, but it will COST you.

and also, even if you are willing to pay for it, MOST PEOPLE wouldn't. so too bad. just gotta live with it.

@jago25 - Phone manufacturers are commercial enterprises. They have to make money in order to keep themselves afloat.

The limitations you mentioned are the result of a compromise between quality and affordability.

I don't know any other person who would consider the K750 a scam. There's more to life than demanding for that "perfect" phone, man. Go out more. Take up a hobby. Whine less. You'd be suprised how adequate your phone will become.

I agree with - Chili here ! When I got my K750i last year, I was very excited as it's my 1st 2.0 MP camfone . . . of course it's just an upgrade of the K700i as we all know it . . . prior to buying, check the 'specs' first . . . and the price too if it's just worth buying the 'toy' ! [addsig]

@jago

I know what you mean.

While I don't believe manufacturers deliberately design in faults such as fragile joysticks to get you to upgrade sooner, thier attitudes and those of the networks do need to be questioned from time to time.

I tried to start a discussion on this sometime ago with a If cars were like phones thread, but noone got the point I was trying to make.

Would we tolerate these sort of issues if the product was a car or TV or some other consumer item? Take a step back and we see how much nonsence we put up with from these companies.

@shockk

You've obviously never read anything by Ralph Nader then.

Why not? We accept crap from computer, software, digital music player and even music selling companies, to name one area. Cars have more computer in them these days, and I can point right at a handful of people from where I'm sitting that have a slightly disfunctional 'board computer' if you like. Nothing major, but just being unable to pop the hood or stuff like that..... still it's a glitch, it shouldn't be there. Still, no reason not to keep the car apparently

People put up with more crap and less 'everlasting' products because we've all been brainstormed that anything high tech is 'outdated' in 2 months time anyway... therefore we don't seem to expect it to live much longer than that. Especially fragile pieces like cellphones, which get handled a lot and usually in a rough manner.
