I put a lot of videos (MP4) on my phone so I have tried a number of tools. Yasa DVD to MP4 converter is what I use most currently (the quality is very good at the low bitrate I choose).

I have noticed that in general, when the video frame rate is higher than 20fps, the sound tends to start cutting out on the w800i, almost as if the processor is overburdened processing the video, and the sound is what suffers. I most often use 15fps and opt to choose higher bitrate instead and the phone plays the mp4 smoothly.

I have encoded a number of full-length movies, MTV videos, concerts on DVDs, etc. for the phone. Generally, I bias the audio over the video (frankly, it's a little screen). So for movies with a nice soundtrack or musicals (e.g. Moulin Rouge), or concerts/karaoke, I use better audio bitrate (144-192), higher sample rates (44.1) and relatively lower video bitrate (96-128) @ 15fps. I often encode the mp4 with the subtitles turned on (works great for musicals/karaoke/concerts).

I also notice that the w800i's MP4 decoder seems to be pretty strict. The video has to have height between 116 and 144, and width no bigger than 176 or it may say "Failure in playback...".
