I've just bought a W800i off Ebay, which had a problem of it's vibra motor running constantly. This has been fixed by simply removing the vibra motor, but the phone has another fault! The screen's backlight doesn't work. I can just about see what's on the screen, and can navigate menus etc., but can't get the backlight to work. Most of the keypad LEDs don't work either. I've taken the LCD out and tried it in another phone (a K750i) and it lights up and works fine. The rest of the phone seems to work fine, calls in/out, buttons all work

Now, the phone was listed as liquid damaged, and the sticker on the battery has gone speckled - does this mean moisture ingress, or does it need to turn red? Apart from a bit around the keypad LEDs (only the top ones of which are working) I cannot see any evidence of water damage on the phone's internals. I've even taken the metal covering off the chips on the back of the PCB and not found anything.

The screen problem - could this be unrelated, i.e. a firmware problem? Anyone else had this problem, and has anyone else managed to fix it?

I've looked at the screen connector and can't see any damage or anything untoward in that area, and no evidence of any moisture damage.

Maybe the previous owner didn't do a complete dry of the before using it again after the water damage. He may have used the phone while the phone still had a little bit of moisture left. That would be my best guess though, but that's just by gathering the facts. Hey Sammy, is this part of your T68i to W800 experiment?

No, not part of the experiment, that's ended but i might start another one soon!

It's a good job it isn't though, I've noticed whilst it's been on that it's been getting quite warm, so I have a nasty feeling you're right there, the phone wasn't dried properly before being used (though as i say i can't find any evidence of water damage). I paid £90 for this phone, though at least the screen is salvageable (£30), covers are absolutely mint and as new (worth about £20?), and the battery still works (few quid), and hopefully I'd be able to sell what was left and just about get my money back.

Just goes to show how risky financially speaking fixing phones can be!

Prognosis not looking good, phone's getting very warm whilst on, and seems to even when off with a battery inserted. Think this phone is more ill than thought

Anyone got a good ultrasonic bath?

If anything, at least I can put those mint covers on my K750/W800 and make it a 'full' W800i, and use the screen on a K750 I've got that's not very well!
