Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) Questions? |

Will the new Memory Stick Micro convert to a Memory Stick Duo? (using an adaptor)
I have seen pictures that the new Memory Stick Micro can be converted to a regular Memory Stick... Is there any adapter that can be added to it to make a Memory Stick Duo? I'm very curious about this new product! Looking at the small size, it has many GB! I heard it can go up to 32 GB? CRAZY! That would be awsome if you can convert it to a Memory Stick Duo and use it on my Sony Ericsson K750i! Will the new Memory Stick be compatable with a Sony Ericsson K750i?
What will the prices be? How much will it be? Kind of scary! The small size can be lost and waste your money!
Sorry, If this had been posted before! I'm just wondering...
Thanks, KLG2992- Kevin |

The Memory Stick Micro will be backward compatible with older phones using Memory Stick PRO adaptor.
6th February 2006
Sony Europe's Recording Media & Energy (RME) division has today announced that it will introduce the first Memory Stick Micro ('M2') products with storage capacities of 256MB, 512MB and 1GB later this year. The new ultra-small memory card is designed to meet the growing storage needs of highly compact, multifunctional mobile phones. An 'M2' adaptor in the size of a standard Memory Stick will allow users to exchange data to Memory Stick PRO compatible products.
The 'M2' media is approximately one-quarter the volume of 'Memory Stick PRO Duo' media, yet only about 1.2mm thick. 'M2' media is designed as an externally removable media with a controlled eject function to prevent users losing the media. Following the trend of mobile phones which operate at 1.8 volts, the 'M2' has been designed as dual-voltage media. In addition to 1.8 volt support, the media offers 3.3 volt operation which is required for existing 'Memory Stick PRO' compatible products.
Launched today, the Sony Ericsson M600i is the first mobile phone compatible with the 'M2'. Users of the new, compact and stylish UMTS messaging phone can store various types of content to the 'M2' media, such as contacts and email attachments as well as multimedia files including music, pictures, video clips and documents. As the 'M2' is an external storage media, it allows users to exchange this content between the mobile phone and a PC with a Memory Stick PRO slot, using the 'M2' adaptor.
Sony plans to ship the 256MB and 512MB versions of the 'M2' media from March, and the 1GB model from May 2006. The estimated enduser price of the 'M2' media will be similar to the price of the current 'Memory Stick PRO Duo' media. Availability and prices will vary from country to country.

I've never yet heard of an M2 to Duo adapter. The only adapter of seen mention of is the M2 to standard memory stick. If an M2 to Duo adapter isn't made available then M2 will not be able to be used in K750 etc.
However I would be VERY surprised if an M2 to Duo adapter doesn't become available in due course (or may already be available). I've google the issue a bit and can't find one as yet.
However Duo sticks will continue to be produced in larger capacities. M2 is not planned to replace Duo, but to run parallel as a memory format for small devices, primarily mobile phones.
So we will definitely see the 4GB and 8GB duo's planned, and I don't see why we won't see even larger capacities. Duo also has the ability to support up to 32GB in capacity.

W700 on the sony website is claimed to support 4GB, so that confirms atleast 4GB for K750 and W800 also.

There is still no adapter to put a micro into a duo slot. Its really annoying as I have an M2 to go into my K800i but it would be nice if it would also work in my PSP (luckily my digital camera takes full size memory sticks).
