Yes disspointing news for both. It is seriously hard to tell til the point that both can be said the same. I heard from one person that both run on something the same player quality. But, from what I heard, I find the W800i to be clearer. The only reason why I mistakened the Ipod to have better quality at first was because of the volume. The Ipod mini has a really high volume compared to W800i but I noticed more a blur in the Ipod mini when turned pretty high on both. I ran a test by turning off both equalizers. tested left with left earbuds. I used standard ear buds because thats the usual people would use. I used right with right then tested both sets. Another thing I find why Ipod have sounded better to some is the type of ear bud. This could explain why the W800 sounded clearer is that the walkman standard ear buds were rubber sound proof type so none of the sound waves (if you are in pre cal yet) Sinusoid waves (for my math teacher )could not excape. Due to observations, the clearer sound could be produced by rebound of waves back into the ear til achieving top quality for the song. As for Ipod ear buds allow those sounds to excape but that leaves the echo sound that could sound more releastic to real performances.
Both are very very hard to judge, but after turning all equalizers off, I would have to say, Walkman W800i wins the clear hearing contest.
And, the Ipod mini wins the real-life performance imitation.
I believe both are great, but whatever, the one that doesn't ruin my ears wins me.

Another thing to add. I used a high quality headphone set and found the walkman's hearing performace to rise to the top. As for Ipod did not change at all. I tested it by using same song, Fly Away from Here by Dropline. The song has many good different levels of pitches making it perfect. Hope that helps.

Yes I did, I listened to both at same time. That is why I said they sounded the same. And both are not cellphones. One is an Ipod Mini, the other is a Sony Ericsson W800i. Took bit of pauses and plays to allign both.

Yeah sorry I meant on both devices.

Haven't compared the two yet but I do have a W800i. Eitherway, as long as the sound quality doesn't sound like you put a mono transistor radio inside a can, HIFI quality doesn't matter much on small devices. If you want great quality music listen to a hifi set.

Just a pice of my mind
