h.263 is part of the mpeg4 specification. (As is the newer and largely unsupported by SE devices h.264 aka AVC). Most stuff you'll find is probably in h.263 or "true" mpeg4 if it's in a .mp4 file, although .mp4 is a "Container" format which just has instructions for how to work with the audio/visual components in it, it can use pretty much any mpeg4 compatible videoformat such as divx or xvid instead of "standard" h.263

It's far too complicated. I'm actually not convinced my above is quite correct in relation to where h.263 stands in the format.
